Raymart had a bit of the jitters when Claudine underwent labor. “Akoninerbiyos, kasi pinu-push ’yong stomach niya, e.” But his wife wastough. She told Raymart that the pain was just similar to dysmenorrhea.“Naglalakad na siya ng 12 noon,” says Raymart proudly. “Parang hindisiya nanganak.”(YES! September 2007 issue)

On July 19, the day Claudine Barretto gave birth, she was surprisingly calm. She was giving husband Raymart Santiago a massage when she felt the signs that she was about to become a mother. Raymart recalls: “Twelve-twenty a.m., pumutok ang water bag niya. Relaxed lang kami.”

The actress even took a shower before the couple left for the hospital. “Sabi niya, maliligo muna siya,” Raymart continues. “Sabi ko, ‘Take your time.’”

When Claudine was brought to the Medical City hospital in Pasig, she was given an epidural, or a local anesthetic, to lessen the pain induced by her labor.

At 7:44 a.m., she gave birth to Rodrigo Santino. Claudine cried. And so did her husband, who took photos of the normal delivery for posterity. “Hindi mo mapipigil ang tears,” Raymart says. “Hindi mo makokontrol.”

The couple’s adopted daughter, Sabina, happily welcomed her baby brother. Before Claudine gave birth, Sabina had been kept informed about the addition to the family, Raymart says: “Hindi naman siya nagseselos.”

At press time, the couple still had not made plans for holding a dedication for Santino, and had not thought about possible ninongs and ninangs. “Hindi pa namin napag-uusapan. Hindi pa namin iniisip ’yon.”

The birth of Santino was the perfect birthday gift for his parents. On July 20, the day after Santino came into this world, Raymart and Claudine celebrated their birthdays. Claudine turned 28; Raymart turned 34.
