Film and television director Mac C. Alejandre believes every generation is marked by its own loveteam.
The post-war '50s had Nestor de Villa-Nida Blanca and Gloria Romero-Luis Gonzalez. The swinging '60s had Romeo Vasquez-Amalia Fuentes and Susan Roces-Eddie Gutierrez. The psychedelic '70s had Tirso Cruz III-Nora Aunor and Edgar Mortiz-Vilma Santos. The romantic '80s had Gabby Concepcion and Sharon Cuneta. The relaxed '90s, lastly, had Piolo Pascual-Judy Ann Santos, Jolina Magdangal-Marvin Agustin, to name a few.
For Direk Alejandre, the current era will be marked by a newcomer. The director of the new GMA-7 primetime soap All My Life, which will premiere on June 29, asserts that its lead stars Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal are set to become a tandem to beat.
"Naniniwala ako sa destiny, naniniwala ako na there are people who are anointed to be where they are supposed to be. Ano man ang gawin mong pagtanggi, o ano man ang gawin mong pagsisigasig, kung hindi ka destined, you will never be, it will never become. Every once in a while, a loveteam evolves that is destined to mark a certain era, naniniwala ako dun, e.
"Did you notice ang nagde-define ng era is a loveteam? Hindi ba? Bakit? Kasi ang loveteam ang nagde-define ng pinaka-basic na emotion at aspiration ng isang grupo ng mga tao. Sila yung tinitilian, sila yung sinasabihan ng 'I love you'. Sila yung collective aspiration, e, sila ang aspiration, sila yung representation ng desire.
"Sa era na ito, sila [Aljur and Kris] yun, nakikita ko yun, nararamdaman ko yun at pinaniniwalaan ko yun," explained the director to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) during the show's presscon last June 23.
Aljur and Kris are both graduates of the GMA-7 reality show StarStruck: The Next Level. Although the two were never paired in the show's finale—Aljur was awarded the Ultimate Hunk, while Kris was awarded Ultimate Love Team with Mart Escudero—they eventually worked together in Boys Nxt Door, Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan, and Dyesebel.
The biggest break for the Aljur-Kris tandem was when they starred as the lead actors of Sine Novela Presents: Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin, GMA-7's highest rating afternoon soap opera. The impressive 32.4 percent rating the show earned for its April 30 episode paved the way for the couple to be given the new primetime soap.
Alejandre, who directed the movie Captain Barbell (2003), starring Bong Revilla, vouched for the strength of the Aljur-Kris loveteam. He said the two young actors exude a new kind of magic, a "fragility" not found in other screen couples.
"Hindi lang dahil sa may magic sila eh, hindi lang yun, e, pero ang pinaka-iba sa kanila, yung gusto mo silang alagaan. 'Pag nakikita mo, they evoke a certain emotional response that makes you care for them. That makes you believe that you are one in their desire, to be able to not only make it in the industry, but to convey the belief that love is worth fighting for... I think that is the beauty of All My Life. From a reality show that was StarStruck, [Aljur and Kris] evolved into a promising couple that deserve a very bright future in the industry," explained the director.
NEW PRIMETIME SOAP. All My Life, helmed by Alejandre and Director Andoy Ranay, tells the story of Luke (Aljur) and Romina (Kris), whose childhood friendship is torn apart by a tragedy. Years later, the two meet again and kindle a relationship that will be threatened by their tragic past.
The cast also includes Zoren Legaspi, Gelli de Belen, Jay Manalo, Lani Mercado, Manily Reynes, Gladys Guevara, Paulo Avelino, LJ Reyes, Jade Lopez, Stef Prescott, Chris Cayzer and Bryan Termulo. Aiza Seguerra sings the theme song, "Friend of Mine."
All My Life will be shown before 24 Oras on the GMA Telebabad primetime block.
