John Lloyd Cruz is one actor who can be paired successfully with different lead actresses. Unlike others, he doesn't need to be romantically involved with a screen partner to give viewers the "kilig" that they expect in a loveteam.
Take for example his recent team-up with Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo. The two do not have a romantic relationship yet they succeeded in entertaining the Pinoy audience with their romantic comedy movies, A Very Special Love (2008) and You Changed My Life (2009).
What does John Lloyd do to maintain chemistry in a loveteam?
"Pina-insured ko na 'yun," the 26-year-old actor said in jest during the press conference of his newest endorsement with Sarah. And then he explained, "Chemistry, it's something na you cannot create out of two people, e. Siguro kami, we have been blessed to have this chemistry onscreen na hindi nahirapan i-translate ng aming director [Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina] through a very successful movie.
"So, paano mo s'ya iingatan? I guess kung gaano 'yong magandang relasyon niyo sa isa't isa, 'yong respeto, 'yong pag-aalaga ng bawat isa—hindi lang sa isa't isa kundi sa sarili mo na rin. I think kung ano 'yong gagawin mo, or gagawin mong pansarili, as an individual, it will immediately affect your chemistry, sa aming dalawa."
The former Rovic of the defunct young-oriented TV series Tabing Ilog added that it's also important to build a strong friendship with the screen partner, maintaining their bond even if they're not working together anymore.
He said, "Sa tingin ko, kung 'yong friendship naman ay totoo, siguro darating 'yong time na kapag hindi kayo nagkikita or nagkakausap, hindi naman nawawala 'yon, nandoon lang siya."
From Bea Alonzo and Sarah Geronimo, John Lloyd will soon be paired with Only You actress Angel Locsin on his next TV series. He said that having different leading ladies is part of his career growth.
"Ideally, ang gusto ko sa career ko, especially sa movie, gusto ko ma-pair sa iba't ibang leading lady kasi para hindi rin ma-suffocate yung girl. And importante rin as an individual—kahit na may mga na-pair ako with Bea, with Sarah, and in the near future I will be paired with Angel Locsin—importante pa rin 'yong individual career path ko para sa sarili ko, and malaking tulong s'ya, e."
After his movie with Batangas Governor Vilma Santos and her son Luis Manzano, A Mother's Story: In My Life, John Lloyd will do a movie with Bea Alonzo. This will be their reunion movie after almost two years; their last hit film was One More Chance (2007).
When their respective schedules are cleared, John Lloyd will work for the first time with Angel Locsin in a TV series. "Nae-excite akong makita kung ano 'yong magagawa namin ni Angel," he enthused.
