Last Sunday, October 4, while PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) was doing the rounds inside the GMA Network Studios compound in Quezon City, we chanced upon John Lapus who was busy packing relief goods intended for the victims of recent typhoon Ondoy.
The comedian-host was all alone in the lobby turned storage room as most of the other Kapuso stars were still busy with SOP while some of the volunteers were taking their lunch break.
Despite his busy schedule, John makes sure to devote time to GMA-7's charitable activities for the benefit of the flood victims.
Generous as John is in his personal and professional affairs, he was surprisingly low key about his charity efforts. The Showbiz Central host admitted feeling uncomfortable being photographed and documented while packing the grocery goods.
INSPIRING OTHERS. John understands though why people need to see their favorite celebrities participating in relief efforts after Ondoy's assault—not to show off but to inspire fans to follow their lead.
"Ako in particular, I don't want pictures, I don't want coverage kasi parang feeling ko ang charity dapat hindi sinasabi," John frankly told PEP while sorting out the donated goods placed in boxes.
"Pero kasi ang nakikita ko, like ngayon pag nakikita nila 'yong idol nila sa TV na tumutulong, na-i-inspire sila to volunteer," he observed.
The tragedy affirmed John's belief in the crucial role played by celebrities in influencing people's behavior.
John didn't experience the wrath of the recent typhoon but he feels that it's his duty to alleviate the pain and suffering of those who were affected.
