"I think government needs a gimmick. Lahat umaakyat. Umaakyat presyo ng gasoline, unemployment, kuryente, tinapay. Umaakyat survey ng Vice-President, Supreme Court, bumaba survey ng Pangulo. As far as I’m concerned, I believe I can defend myself well," says Party-list representative Mikey Arroyo about the tax evasion complaint against him and his wife, Angela Montenegro.

Ang Galing Party-list representative and former presidential son Juan Miguel Arroyo—or Mikey Arroyo in showbiz—and his wife face a P73.85-million tax evasion complaint by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

In a report published in the website of Sun Star Manila today, April 7, the former actor and son of former President and now-Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, was said to have failed to file his Internal Tax Revenue (ITR) for the year 2005, 2008, and 2009; while his wife, Ma. Angela Montenegro, had not filed tax returns from 2003 to 2009.

Mikey Arroyo denied the allegations. He said that the tax case filed against him is just a gimmick to boost PNoy's sagging political ratings.

"I think government needs a gimmick. Lahat umaakyat. Umaakyat presyo ng gasoline, unemployment, kuryente, tinapay. Umaakyat survey ng Vice-President, Supreme Court, bumaba survey ng Pangulo. As far as I’m concerned, I believe I can defend myself well," he said in an interview with ABS-CBN News.

He added, “I have nothing against government going after people supposedly remiss in paying taxes. Secondly, maybe it’s a blessing in disguise. They filed a case against me, now rules of evidence will apply. What I’m worried about is how come they sent me a notice of audit, they gave me 10 days to come up with requirements and they filed a case against me after 2 days. This is harassment.

"I have been dutifully paying my taxes. Everything I own is in my [statement of assets, liabilities and net worth] SALN. The issue here is lack of due process in this audit. If ever I haven’t been paying right taxes, I could easily pay penalty, which is under the Constitution. I have been paying right taxes."

In a separate interview with dzBB, Mikey contested the BIR's claim that his wife Angela had no ITRs. He said that she was not employed.
