Celebrities took a break from their busy work schedules yesterday, July 31, for the second annual Star Magic Games.
Artists from ABS-CBN's talent management arm made their way to the Colegio de San Agustin in Makati as early as seven o'clock in the morning to warm up for the various sports activities lined up for the day.
Talents, handlers and road managers, as well as the staff of ASAP Rocks all turned their game faces on as they competed against each other in basketball, volleyball, badminton and dodge ball; and in street and relay games like mini fun run, tug of war, and patintero.
The games were formally opened by hosts Megan Young and Andrei Felix.
Piolo Pascual led the opening prayer. John Lloyd Cruz gave the opening remarks and jokingly said, "Handlers, ito na ang chance ninyong makaganti sa mga alaga niyo. Ganun din sa mga artists."
Enchong Dee also led the players in declaring the oath of sportsmanship.
In the end, the Red team took home the trophy as overall champion, beating the scores of the Yellow, Green and Blue teams.
Special awards were also given out to several players for being the best in their respective sports.
Boom Labrusca was named MVP (most valuable player) for basketball and Joseph Marco is rookie of the year.
Kristel Moreno was also awarded MVP in volleyball.
GUESTS. Star Magic executives Johnny "Mr. M" Manahan and Mariole Alberto were present to supervise the event.
Other guests included ABS-CBN executives Cory Vidanes (head of entertainment production), Ernie Lopez from the publishing group, March Ventosa of CCPMG (cable channels and print media group), August Benitez of channel 2 sales and talent manager Keren Pascual.
ASAP vs. STAR MAGIC. The highlight of the event was a basketball match between players from Star Magic and artists from ASAP Rocks.
Team Star Magic was headed by Gerald Anderson, last year's MVP, who teamed up with Xian Lim, Rayver Cruz, Jason Abalos, Arron Villaflor, Young JV, Ryan Bang, Gerard Acao and Ram Sagad.
They played against Team ASAP led by Gary Valenciano, with players Martin Nievera, Derek Ramsay, Gab Valenciano, Jhong Hilario, John Pratts, Billy Crawford, Vhong Navarro and Eric Tai.
The game turned out in favor of Team ASAP who were very aggressive in both offense and defense, rarely giving their opponents a chance to score, except in the final quarter when Star Magic was able to lead by a few points.
Derek Ramsay was responsible for leading the team to an 80-79 victory.
His ever-supportive girlfriend Angelica Panganiban was there to take a tight hug and a celebratory kiss from him right after the game.
ABSENTEES. Missing in action were rumored couple Bea Alonzo and Zanjoe Marudo. They are currently in Paris touring for the ABS-CBN road show Kapamilya Caravan.
They are joined by Bea's Guns and Roses co-stars Robin Padilla and fellow Star Magic artist Diether Ocampo.
Jake Cuenca is also abroad to attend the international screening events of his movie In the Name of Love with Aga Muhlach and Angel Locsin.
Pregnant actresses Kristine Hermosa and Andi Eigenmann did not attend the sports event.
