"It's actually close to how I am in real life—a girl aspiring to be a fashion designer..."
Laureen Uy is known in the local fashion scene as the "style breaker," which also happens to be the label of her own clothing line.
In showbiz meanwhile, she is known as the younger sister of celebrity stylist Liz Uy, former girlfriend of actor John Lloyd Cruz.
Laureen ventures into acting these days as she plays the role of the chic Amethyst Sy, child of Cherry Pie Picache (Jean Sy) and Richard Yap (Chen Sy)—which makes her character, Jade's (Kim Chiu) half-sister—in ABS-CBN's upcoming primetime series My Binondo Girl.
Asked if she will play a villain's role, she smiled and slyly asked us to watch the soap which is set to premiere next Monday, August 22.
At the press conference of My Binondo Girl held earlier today, August 16, at the Golden Bay Seafood Restaurant in Pasay City, Laureen was the obvious newcomer. But that fact did not leave her out of the limelight as questions were thrown at the presidential table where the rest of her co-stars sat.
How did she land the role?
With a smile that reminds us of her elder sister, Laureen relayed, "Everyone knows naman na I'm the younger sister of Liz, and Liz is a very close friend of Ate Kris Aquino, tapos sila Mother Biboy [Arboleda], Sir Deo [Endrinal].
"Nung isang party, sinama po ako ni Ate, tapos niloloko-loko ako nila Sir Deo, 'Ay, may itsura kang bata ka!'
"Yun, tapos isang araw na lang, sinama nila ako sa workshop."
The stylish 21-year-old underwent her first acting workshop.
She said, "Iyak na ako nang iyak, parang nalabas ko na lahat ng luha ko. And then along the way, ang dami ko nga pong natutunan."
Initially she doubted how and why she was cast as Amethyst.
"Parang in my head nga, 'Sigurado ba kayo na gusto n'yo itong ibigay sa 'kin?
"Kasi knowing na lahat ng kasama ko is big actors—like Kim Chiu, Ai-Ai [delas Alas], Cherry Pie, Gina Pareño, sobra akong privileged.
"And parang for me, it's really a big opportunity for my skills, to learn more, and para makatrabaho ko sila lahat. Dream yun para sa akin."
Laureen has her game face on. She admits that she has to adjust to taping schedules since she has a blog and business too.
"Ang dami ko rin usually na ginagawa na ibang stuff, pero sa taping kasi, parang ang saya lang. So, nawawala yung pagod ko..."
The one challenge she had to step up to, however, is overcoming her shyness.
Laureen confessed, "Lagi akong nahihiya, pero sobra talaga nilang bait. Lagi nila akong kinakausap, lagi nila akong sinasabihin, 'O kamusta ka?'
"Nagtutulungan lahat... Kahit na puyatan na, madaling-araw na, lahat ng tao alive pa rin, nagtatawanan lagi.
"Laging masaya sa set namin."
REACTION FROM ATE LIZ AND FRIENDS. Laureen did not make known her decision to act. Although her Ate Liz knew, their network of friends were oblivious of her project.
"Nagulat nga sila, kasi hindi ko sinasabi na nagwo-workshop ako, na nag-My Binondo Girl na rin ako.
"So, nagulat na lang sila one day, nakita na lang nila yung trailer, kasama daw pala ako."
She is happy nonetheless that everyone has got her back.
"They're actually all very supportive," the chinita beauty stated.
"Binibigyan din nila ako ng tips, like yun, nagtanong ako kay Anne [Curtis]."
From her Ate she got advice as well.
"Sabi naman niya, 'Show your true self and wag kang mahihiya kung ano man yung dumating sa 'yo dahil blessing 'yan lahat.'"
WORKING WITH JOHN LLOYD. When the topic of the interview switched to future acting roles, the inevitable question of doing a project with Kapamilya talent John Lloyd Cruz came up.
John Lloyd, as mentioned earlier, is her sister Liz's ex-boyfriend.
With a modest smile Laureen stated, "Hindi naman siguro gagawin ng ABS yun!"
Further pressed for an answer she replied, "Siyempre okay lang po sa akin kahit sino... wala po akong problema kahit sinong ibigay sa akin."
Given their shared history, were they ever friends, or rather, are they still friends?
"Yes, we're still friends. Wala namang bad blood sa kanila ni Ate," remarked Laureen.
For sure a guesting of My Binondo Girl's cast at ASAP, ABS-CBN's Sunday variety show, will be coming up soon. What if she and John Lloyd bump into each other?
"Excited na po ako makita siya! Ang tagal ko na po siyang hindi nakita, yayakapin ko siya!" she enthused.
