In the next couple of months, Vina Morales will be busy preparing for her next project, the local adaptation of Broadway musical Rock of Ages.
The singer-actress says being part of this production completes her career as a performer.
“Ito na lang talaga ang kulang,” Vina says. “At least, now I can say I’ve done everything. Ito na, at least nag-theater na ako for the first time.”
Vina is already an experienced performer but she admits that she still gets very nervous every time she talks about Rock of Ages.
“Siguro kasi masyadong mataas ang tingin ko sa theater,” Vina says.
“I’ve done several concerts, sing and dance. It’s almost the same din naman kasi ito din naman ang gagawin ko, e, sing and dance, ‘tapos acting.
“Kaya lang ‘yong level na parang, ‘Shucks, ayaw kong magkamali.’”
Although she worries about what she might do once onstage, Vina still feels excited about this new venture. She has enjoyed watching plays ever since she was a child.
She adds, “Kasi ‘yon ‘yong passion ko, e, to perform in front, onstage, and to see the reactions right away.
“So ito, it’s more of singing and dancing. Then, may interaction pa with the people. ‘Tapos ‘80s music pa, my god!
“Well, I was still young when I heard those songs, I was still a kid.
“Pero from time to time kasi hindi nawawala ‘yong mga gano’ng songs, e.
“Di ba, you go to a bar now and sometimes you request for ‘80s music, everyone’s really dancing.
“So, talagang maraming mag-e-enjoy na different stages ng mga tao.”
LEARNING FROM FELLOW ARTISTS. Another reason Vina looks forward to doing Rock of Ages is her opportunity to work with fellow singers and actors.
In this production, she will be joined by international rock artist Mig Ayesa, local singers Nyoy Volante, Jet Pangan, and many others.
Vina relates, “I’ve performed almost more than half of my life. I always make sure that I would also learn from other artists.
“I will never stop learning.
“I know with Rock of Ages I will learn more from the cast, from my director, from everyone in the staff.”
GETTING HELP FROM STAR MAGIC. Meanwhile, once they started rehearsing for the musical, which will be shown in June, Vina will be juggling her time with her job as a performer and her role as a mom to her daughter to Ceana.
This is not be a problem for the singer-actress because, according to her, she will get help from her talent management, Star Magic.
Vina says the ABS-CBN talent arm usually takes charge of planning and arranging her schedule so she can have enough time for everything.
“They help me manage my time kasi they know din naman that I have a daughter.
“Nama-manage ako nila very well,” says Vina.
Even though the rehearsal schedule will be very rigid, Vina says that she’s trained by Mr. Johnny Manahan, head of Star Magic and director of weekly variety show ASAP, to endure long hours of practice.
She remembers, “Pagdating sa trabaho, you have to really be on time, you have to learn your songs.
“Whatever you need to do, you have to prepare and give your best kasi ‘yon ang mga nakikita ko.
“Kasi kay Mr. M, kahit ilang beses na rehearsal, pumupunta ako kahit alam ko na ‘yong gagawin ko.
“But you know, my respect for him… [how he gives] more effort para doon sa mga baguhan na mag-rehearse nang paulit-ulit, parang wow, sobrang hanga ako sa kanya.”
For Vina, such discipline helps young celebrities to further improve their talents.
“They’re strict in a way na dapat gano’n,” Vina says.
“Kasi, hindi ka naman iistriktuhan kung… they just protect your talent.
“Sa nakikita ko, strict is good when it comes to work.
“Hindi rin naman sila sumosobra, e, sa tama lang.
“Para naman you’ll be more professional and you’ll learn to love your craft more.”
This quality of Star Magic executives convinces Vina to stay as a Kapamilya talent despite previous offers from rival networks.
She also stresses, “If you really have respect for the people you work with, mas mapapagaan ang trabaho, mas magiging professional ka.
