Former actress Cristina Gonzales, two-term councilor of Tacloban City, is now a loving wife to Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez.
She shot her last film Bagamundo with Chuck Perez, Priscilla Almeda and Ramon Christopher in 1997. Ten years later, she decided to enter politics.
Formerly known by her screen name Kring-Kring Gonzales, she began her showbiz career as a singer in the 80’s.
Later on, she became one of the co-hosts of GMA Supershow with German Moreno.
In the 90’s, Cristina ventured into ST (sex trip) productions under Seiko films along with other beauties such as Gretchen Barretto, Rita Avila and Rina Reyes.
In an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) at Tacloban Municipal Hall last June 29, Cristina reminisced her days as an actress.
CHERISHING SHOWBIZ. Looking back, what is she most grateful for during her life as an actress?
“Well, alam mo, being a part of showbiz, mahal ko talaga ang showbiz. It exposed me to so many people… and good people.”
She acknowledges that being a celebrity before boosted her chance of success in politics.
“Kung wala ako sa showbiz, di siguro hindi ko alam kung baka nung first term ko hindi ako nag-number one councilor, di ba?
“So, it really helped me na madali akong makalapit sa tao. It helped me also in learning how to…makihalubilo sa iba’t ibang klaseng tao, mataas man, mababa, kahit sino.
“At the same time, not only sa pulitika, kahit sa business, maraming nakakatulong sa akin, like you guys, mga media…I opened a business, you helped promote it.
“So, it’s really a win-win situation, yung showbiz. Kaya mahal ko talaga ang showbiz. I really cherish showbiz.
“And of course, my dad was there, nauna siya. And of course, I’m also thankful na may father din ako who was in showbiz kaya madali ako na makapasok sa showbiz,” she elaborated.
CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK. On the flip side, does she have any regrets?
“Actually kasi, ngayon nga, Kristyano ako ngayon. I go to Victory Christian Fellowship and I’ve learned so many things about how to live…about life and how to bring up my children…and all these things.
“Siyempre, I’m not saying naman na… Siyempre, sabi ko nga, mahal ko ang showbiz, di ba? Mahal ko pa rin 'yan.”
Without discrediting the good things that showbiz gave her, Cristina said that if she had the same perspective then as she did now, there were certain things she wouldn’t have done.
“Siguro kung naging Kristyano ako noon pa, hindi na ‘ko nakapasok sa mga, let’s say, masyadong sexy or sexy [roles]…
“Although yung sexy namin noon, wala namang talagang private parts [exposed], very tame.
“But still, the image na ganun, sana hindi ko na nagawa yun siguro, kung medyo napalapit ako kay God at that time.
“But, you know, God will…may verse nga eh, na He will turn it all for the good. So ngayon, nakita ko naman…
“Ngayon, I realized naman what’s right and what’s wrong, God naman turned everything for the good kasi nagamit ko pa rin ang showbiz…yung mga friends ko dun, especially yung mga showbiz press who are always here every fiesta helping us promote Tacloban.
“And of course, yung mga contacts natin, 'no. And being also close sa mga tao kasi nga nakilala ako sa pag-aartista. So, yun, win-win situation. But, yun, maybe yun lang.”
FAMILY AND FRIENDS. Cristina has two stepsons and two daughters with Mayor Romualdez – Franco, Raymond, Sophia and Dianna.
Are they aware of her past as an actress? How do they feel about it?
“Well, they know. But I always tell them, na, you know you’re lucky kasi…you know that mommy used to be exposed to showbiz.
“Your dad naman is a politician. At least, you know, we can teach you more things, when you grow up we can guide you.”
In terms of communicating with actresses of her generation, Cristina says they have caught up with today’s technology.
“Yes, there’s some that… of course, through Facebook, talagang it’s hard not to communicate with people through Facebook.”
“And even Carla Estrada who lives here, si Alma Concepcion is also one recent – yun naman yung mga recent ngayon – one of my good friends also.
“Well, mostly girls. Don’t worry, walang boys. Walang boys. Kasi hindi naman ako masyadong nali-link nun before,” she says with a laugh.
