People always hit her with negative comments about her fashion sense and her music style, but Yeng Constantino is not one to gets affected easily.
In her six years in show business, the former Pinoy Dream Academy grand star dreamer has learned to accept criticism and to be inspired with compliments.
“Parang mas secure ako ngayon,” she told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other media in an interview during the opening of Academy of Rock at Power Plant Mall, Rockwell Drive, Makati City recently.
“Siguro nag-mature ako as a person when it comes to criticisms.
“Nakikinig ako pero hindi ko naman lahat tine-take personally, especially ‘yong mga bad criticisms.
“Kailangan kong kunin ‘yong magaganda then, itapon ‘yong hindi maganda, mas nagma-mature ako through that.”
She further said, “At the same time, hindi ko iniisip, honestly, alam mo ‘yon, na parang produkto ka lang.
“I’m really just expressing myself.
“At the same time, kumo-compromise ka kasi hindi lang naman ikaw ‘yong tao sa island. Natuto na ako.”
TRYING OUT NEW STYLE. In her earlier years in showbiz, Yeng was usually tagged as “baduy” because of the way she dresses. However, it seemed out of character for her to follow the latest fashion trends.
Trying different styles is part of her growth.
“Plus, ayaw ko ring ma-bore sa mga ginagawa ko,” she added. Gusto ko po talaga na parang ano, ‘Gusto kong tikman ‘to. Ano kaya ang lasa niyan?’
“Kapag sobrang astig, ‘Wow! Okay pala ‘yon.’ Kapag pangit, ‘Ay!’
“So, parang try and try lang until you find your style.
“‘Yong season ng buhay ko parang nahanap ko na ‘yong pinakagusto ko. Masasabi ko na mas confident na ako ngayon.”
Yeng even pointed out, “Nakita n’yo naman sa ASAP, di ba, sobrang dami kong tina-try na damit.
“Sometimes hit or miss ‘yon, e. Parang ako, kakausapin ako ng manager ko, ‘Yeng, hindi ‘yan.’ Okay. Try naman tayo ng next, bago naman.”
While some dislike her personal style, others appreciate her edgy look. During the 3rd Star Magic Ball in 2009, for instance, she was hailed as the “Most Fashion Forward.”
She also stressed, “Dati, most of the time parang kinakabahan ako kung tama ba ‘to.
“Ngayon, parang nagkaroon ako ng security na i-let go na lang and just be really what I want. Ito na talaga ang gusto ko.
“I know naman na hindi naman ako nakakasakit ng tao with my fashion, parang mas confident talaga. Ang sarap mag-express ng sarili.”
BRAND NEW YENG. With regard to her music, Yeng is up to something new for her upcoming fifth album.
She will be mixing pop rock with techno music in some of her songs.
“I’m very excited with my new album.
“Magta-try ako ng bagong genre, na hindi naman din nahihiwalay sa bagong genre ko, pero iba siya.
“Sobrang iba from the past albums. Exciting, e.”
The Rockoustic Princess said she’s ready to take another risk in her music career.
“Ang sarap, e. Ang ganda kasi para kang nag-e-experiment, e,” she said.
“Hindi naman gano’n ‘yong mga artist dati.
“‘Yong Beatles, kung nag-stick lang sila sa isang genre, feeling ko hindi sila naging rock singers.
“So, kailangan ko talaga mag-take ng risks.
“At the same time, kapag nag-take ka ng risk, alam mong hindi ka naging duwag, e.”
Instead of fear, this actually brought fulfillment to the 23-year-old singer-songwriter.
“Hindi ako takot kasi ito ‘yong reality kung sino si Yeng ngayon.
“Gusto kong ipakita sa mga tao kung ano ako now, brand new Yeng.”
GRATEFUL FOR THE BLESSINGS. Meanwhile, during the interview, the media joked about her blooming aura.
The 23-year-old singer-songwriter was quick to say that it’s not because she’s romantically involved right now.
She even joked, “Wala nga akong lovelife and wala rin akong manliligaw!”
The Star Magic talent credits her positive outlook in life instead.
“Hindi ko na rin alam, pero I’m happy na hindi lang ‘yon ang nagpapa-blooming sa akin.
“Siguro ‘yong peace din na natagpuan ko inside my heart right now,” she smiled.
Yeng thinks that keeping her faith to God has helped see things in a different way.
“Parang the more you know kung ano ‘yong love ni God for the people, gano’n din nae-express, parang wala kang masyadong expectations, parang lahat sila cool lang.
With all the blessings the come to her life, Yeng never forgets to give thanks to the Lord every day.
“I always worship every morning for one hour,” she related.
“Kinakantahan ko si God for one hour. Kapag late na ako, 30 minutes.
“Bubuksan ko lang ‘yong binta ‘tapos magwo-worship lang ako.
“Kakantahan ko lang si God and sobrang sarap.
“I also read the Bible every day. I read it every morning and night.”
In this part of her life, Yeng is certain that, “Sobrang masaya ako ngayon.”
