Alden Richards sees importance of self-reinvention in showbiz

Aug 27, 2012
In less than two years in showbiz, Alden Richards already learned this: “Kung wala ka namang maipapakitang bago, wala na e, aayawan ka na nila.”

Kapuso talent Alden Richards never thought he would become an actor, after being made to do more than a hundred takes for one sequence of a TV commercial he was doing.

In an interview with (Philippine Entertainment Portal) recently, he related this unforgettable experience.

“Mayroon pa po akong commercials dati na we took 255 takes of the same scene kasi wala akong acting.

“Napagalitan [ako] because of my acting.

“Since that day, hindi ko na makakalimutan ‘yong exact moment na ‘yon, halos whole day.

“The next day, inulit ‘yong shoot na walang additional payment. So, parang I just have to face that reality.”

The situation might have been a little depressing for the former Starstruck hopeful, but Alden did not let it affect his plan to become a celebrity.

Instead, he accepted it and made it his motivation to pursue his dream.

“On that day po, doon po nag-start ‘yong ‘I have to push myself with acting.'

“Masaya, masarap pong makaarte sa TV.

“Acting has been my passion since I started showbiz. Ang sarap maging aktor.”

Because of his perseverance, the 19-year-old actor is now becoming popular especially among the youth.

Teenagers do not only get attracted to his cute smile and dimples, they also admire him for being an effective leading man to every project that he does.

In his current TV series, One True Love, Alden gives enough “kilig” to the young ladies who follow his team up with Louise delos Reyes.

When (Philippine Entertainment Portal) asked how he became a better actor after the incident, Alden replied simply: “Workshops.”

He continued, “GMA-7 has been giving us a lot of workshops, not only acting, but also dancing ang hosting.

“At the same time, self-reinvention po talaga, more on myself.

“Ine-examine ko ang performances ko before like I’m reviewing something.

“Doon ko po tinitingnan kung paano ko ide-develop ‘yong sarili ko, ano pa ang pwede kong ipakita na different ways to impress them and to keep them interested until the end.”

OFFERING SOMETHING NEW. The former commercial model, aware that there will be more new celebrities coming into showbiz, has vowed to give that extra effort to be different.

“Medyo mahirap po kasi you have to do good!” he told PEP.

“You have to give your best at this project. Pero sa next project, mas best mo pa. So, talagang it’s a working effort.”

This attitude is what Alden always keeps in mind when he is doing a new soap opera or a new movie.

For example, he said, in One True Love their team only hoped to survive the initial planned eight-week airing of the show. Fortunately, they did a good job in the ratings game, so the series was extended to five more weeks.

To keep their avid viewers glued to their show, Alden said he and his team have to give something new to the audience.

“Kung wala ka namang maipapakitang bago, wala na e, aayawan ka na nila.”

EVERYTHING HAPPENS VERY FAST. It was December 2010 when Alden signed an exclusive contract with GMA Network.

A month after that, he became a leading man to Louise de los Reyes in her launching teleserye Alakdana (2011).

Since then, opportunities started coming in for Alden.

He became part of the GMA7’s hit teen-oriented weekly series Tween Hearts (2011), portrayed roles in several episodes of Spooky Nights (2011), and got a supporting role in the primetime series My Beloved (2012).

In his less than two years in the industry, Alden has also done several movies, including the horror movie The Road (2011) and the fantasy movie Ang Panday 2 (2011)

He is currently doing another movie for the Metro Manila Film Festival, Si Agimat, Si Enteng and Me. This is topbilled by big names in showbiz like Vic Sotto, Bong Revilla, and Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo.

Going back to the beginning of his showbiz journey, Alden realized, “Parang nararamdaman ko po na it’s very fast-pacing.

“Parang ang bilis na I just started, I turned a year last December 8.

“Looking back at the projects that I’ve done, parang ang bilis pa, e, for a beginner.”

PEP asked if he hears complaints about this from other celebrities who have been in the business longer than he has.

He paused and replied, “Actually, hindi po maiwasan na may naririnig din po akong feedbacks na ganyan.”

BECOME A GOOD ROLE MODEL. But instead of trying to figure out why he has been given more opportunities than other talents who are his seniors, Alden ignores the issue.

He explained, “I don’t wanna entertain kasi baka hindi lang po maganda ang kalabasan ng conversation.

“I just pray na lang na sana magtuluy-tuloy pa, sana huwag magbago ‘yong support.

“I just pray for a lot of projects and endorsements.”

Along with his prayers, Alden also says he pushes himself to work hard.

“Talagang kailangan to do better sa lahat ng gagawing projects, be a better product of yourself in every project that we do.

“You just have to find ways to reinvent yourself for the purpose na parang pambulaga.

“It’s a conscious effort.

“Siguro also, always find different ways to attack a character in a project, and siguro to be a good role model na rin to the public eyes.”
