Benjamin Alves relates how showbiz introduced him to skin-care regimen

Just like any average guy, grooming was not a main concern to Benjamin Alves. But not until he decided to join showbiz a few years back. Since then, he has become quite particular about his looks because, “I think with any job, whatever it requires you, you respect it so that’s what I’m doing now.”

Sure, Benjamin Alves is good-looking to begin with. He is blessed with great genes just like his famous uncle, Piolo Pascual.

But now that the 23-year-old Kapuso actor is becoming more visible in the entertainment scene, he began going the extra mile to look better.

KILLER SMILE. On August 18, at the premiere night of Guni-Guni, PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) got to ask Lovi Poe’s leading man his secret behind that "killer smile."

“Nothing much actually, but I did wear corrective braces before kasi there [are] some [misalignments],” Benjamin said.

According to medicinenet.com, patients with crooked teeth are given corrective braces in order to realign them.

It works by “applying continuous pressure over a period of time to slowly move teeth in a specific direction. As the teeth move, the bony tooth socket reabsorbs and changes shape as pressure is applied.”

Benjamin said his corrective braces helped a lot in making his teeth look more visually appealing for the cameras.

But what matters more, he said, are the daily care practices he does religiously to keep his pearly whites healthy.

“I always brush and floss my teeth, like, after every meal.

“Actually, flossing talaga, e, iyon iyong mas effective.

“If you don’t do it kasi to your teeth, it deteriorates, e. And brushing can only do so much.

“So, I always floss every after meal.”

SKIN CARE. Next topic was grooming.

Prior to joining showbiz, he admitted to not having any skin-care regimen.

“I was really bad then. I used to run cross country, e, so I was really, really dark. Not naman dark talaga, but parang I was so tan.

“So, I think with any job, whatever it requires you, you respect it so that’s what I’m doing now.”

Benjamin now gets exfoliating treatments three times a week.

“I go to the derma whenever I can, only because of the light and kapag nagte-taping outside.

“Nakakasira kasi talaga ng mukha, e, so you have to moisturize.

“And also, the skin doesn’t get even any more kasi most of the time you’re getting shot up to here lang [bust area], so hindi na pantay.

“So, I do only that and daily upkeep na lang by washing my face.”

DIET AND EXERCISE. His tried and tested regimen is getting enough sleep.

“Parang sobrang nakakatawa iyon ‘no, bilang artista ako, na iyon ang advice ko.

“Pero sleeping talaga helps your skin a lot.

“I also exercise, I run a lot, and I watch what I eat.

“I think that’s also one of the things kung bakit [gumaganda] ang skin.”

Besides going to the gym regularly, Benjamin also runs and plays basketball to stay fit.

“I’m also getting into boxing now para maiba naman,” he added.

Ahough he’s not one to follow fad diets, he tries to eat healthy.

“I eat lots of fruits lang and I think huwag iyong kakain ka ng masyadong oily na pagkain.

“Iyon kasi iyon, e, parang nakaka…I think for your face, kapag pagod tapos haggard ka pa, tapos iyong kinakain mo pa masama, it really shows.

“Kasi iyong buong disposition mo after you eat, you feel sluggish, parang gano’n.

“So when you’re eating right and you exercise well, it changes your mood.

“Kasi I know... from people, like, when people talk to me and I’m tired parang, ‘Wow, you look really sad.’

“And it’s funny because I’m not sad, I’m just tired.

“So when I come back from the gym parang, ‘O, you really look happy. You really look awake.’

“Nakakatawa that it all translates sa face.”
