Jessica Sanchez never imagined herself becoming a fashion brand endorser, moreso a "fashion idol." She admits to being a lousy dresser when she was younger, but now with her celebrity status, she says she is ready to take on the challenge of becoming a real fashion icon, especially to her fans.

American Idol season 11 finalist Jessica Sanchez is the latest celebrity to join the roster of local clothing brand Bench’s international endorsers.

The Mexican-American singer with Filipino roots was formally introduced on September 25, through a press conference held at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel, Mandaluyong.

That afternoon, she wore a yellow statement shirt that said “Music & Me”—a perfect description of how her passion for music turned her life around to become a new-age fashion icon.

JESSICA AND MUSIC. In her interview with program host Ginger Conejero, Jessica recalled her childhood and how she discovered a knack for singing at the age of two.

Among her favorite songs back then were hits by Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and the late Whitney Houston.

The 17-year-old said she felt glad about the opportunity to sing Whitney’s hit “I Will Always Love You” on American Idol.

That episode was aired live in the US just days after the Grammy award-winning singer passed away on February 11.

It became one of Jessica’s most memorable performances on the show, along with her duet with Broadway legend Jennifer Holiday.

Together, they belted out the hit “And I Am Telling You (I’m Not Going)” from the musical Dreamgirls.

She also named her performance of Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” as one of her one of her favorites.

Her talent in hitting powerful high notes became Jessica’s signature move, which prompted fans and critics tag her as the “next big diva.”

JESSICA AND FASHION. Of course, when people say diva—as in Whitney, Celine, and Mariah proportions—they’re not just talking about vocal prowess, but classy fashion sense as well.

Jessica admitted that prior to Idol, she never really had a liking for tasteful clothing.

She says she would go to her high school in Chula Vista, California wearing the most boring shirt she could find in her closet.

It was only when she finally got to meet some professional fashion stylists on the set of Idol, that she began to discover her own brand of style.

Her fashion mood board includes a lot of glam rock items—lots of black, some solid colors with glittery accents, leather, jeans, and spiky boots that are similar to what she was wore during the presscon.

At the recent American Idol Live Tour 2012 concert , held at the Smart Araneta Colisuem on September 21, Jessica wore several glam rock outfits.

First, she donned a glittered black and gold asymmetrical dress with black tights and high heels.

For her next set, the dress was peeled to reveal a shimmering blue top and black skirt underneath.

On days when she would perform mellow hits—like when she sang “Star Spangled Banner” at the National Memorial Day Concert in Washington D.C. on May 27—Jessica opts for floor length gowns that carefully trace her lean figure.

She’s also learned to appreciate designer pieces, like the Donatella Versace dress she wore on June 12, at the Chesapeake Arena in Oklahoma City for the opening ceremonies of the NBA Finals.

For more casual outings, like her September 20 appearance in GMA-7's Eat Bulaga!, Jessica wears comfortable items like a loose top and skinny jeans.

She would, however, pair those with fancy boots and high heels—making her outfit look eye-catching without too much trimmings.

Jessica says, as time goes by she is learning how to embrace her new identity—both as a rising singing star and a fashion icon to a younger set of Filipino women.
