Perhaps this just shows how different Derek Ramsay is from other showbiz personalities.
On August 29, just a day after he and Cristine Reyes actually became an item, Derek boldly admitted in a phone interview that he is now dating his friend and former No Other Woman co-star.
Unlike other celebrity couples that choose to keep their relationships under wraps, Derek looked proud to show off his new girlfriend at a charity event he attended on September 1.
The TV5 star was among the celebrity players for the charity basketball game, dubbed HERO Ball, organized by Gerald Anderson at the Makati Coliseum.
Cristine was there, of course, along with Derek’s friends, to show her support.
Derek's girlfriend was obviously lovestruck and in a happy mood. Usually hesitant and guarded in public, Cristine gamely agreed to do interviews with the media about her new relationship.
And she even did it twice!
The first interview happened right after the game, when reporters cornered the actress as she was about to leave the bleachers section.
She confirmed that everything became official on August 28, sometime after the actress graced the press conference for her new show Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin at ABS-CBN’s Dolphy Theater.
“Oo, oo. So naiintindihan niyo na kung bakit hindi ako makasagot no’n, di ba, noong time na tinatanong niyo ko,” she said.
FROM FRIENDS TO LOVERS. Later, Cristine joined Derek and his friends at the parking lot where they were cornered again by PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other media outfits.
This time, the couple did their first interview together, all the while showing sweetness and awkwardness that is normal for new couples, who have just moved up from being friends.
“I’m happy, I’m very happy… kasi we skipped all the getting to know each other. I know everything about this girl. I know what pisses her off,” Derek said.
“Yeah, super, alam niya lahat. And alam ko rin naman lahat about him. Very open siya. Lahat, lahat napag-uusapan namin,” Cristine agreed.
Cristine recognized what other reporters had noticed: that this is her first “controversy-free” relationship.
“Sobra! Sinabi ko nga sa kanya kanina, e, na parang ito iyong first relationship ko na parang lahat… first time ko na lahat ng tao—mga katrabaho, lahat ng makita ko—kino-congratulate ako...
“Nagugulat ako dahil all of a sudden… Bakit lahat kino-congratulate ako? Ah, siguro baka dahil nalaman nila iyong news kasi wala namang… wala namang ibang [posibleng dahilan], di ba?”
Even Derek’s parents and hers approve his relationship with Cristine.
“Everyone is happy. My mom likes AA [Cristine’s nickname]. My dad thinks she’s a charming lady… I don’t know why,” Derek teased, to which Cristine responded with a playful snarl.
He continued, “I was telling AA this morning, it’s weird how comfortable I was with her mom. Her mom and I had a really good conversation this morning over breakfast.”
TESTED FRIENDSHIP. Derek and Cristine have been really good friends for nearly three years.
When they decided to “level up” last week, did Derek have any concerns about sacrificing their friendship?
“No, I’m not worried about ruining the friendship. There’s no way that we could ruin this friendship. That friendship has been tested.
“Isang beses lang ako inaway nito at pinagsabihan ko siya,” Derek quipped.
“No, I’m not worried about that. That I can promise you, that we’ll not be affected no matter what the outcome is,” he adds, pertaining to the possibility of their relationship going kaput in the future.
As for their showbiz careers, Derek and Cristine say that they feel more inspired now. In fact, they are both enjoying their time together as movie co-stars even more.
Derek and Cristine are currently working on a film under Viva Films.
“I’m having so much fun!” says Derek about working with his ladylove.
