Angelu de Leon rues the day she left school for showbiz, glad that her two older daughters are bent on their studies more than anything else.

Angelu de Leon is relieved that her two older daughters, Nicole and Louise, are shunning show business to focus on their studies.

Angelu did the exact opposite when she was in their age.

The 34-year-old actress had said she would not mind if her daughters join showbiz.

“Basta sa akin, studies first,” she had said in an interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) last August for her show Pyra: Ang Babaeng Apoy.

She was “thankful" that her daughters were doing just that.

She related, “Naaalala ko dati, ako, bibitawan ko talaga ang pag-aaral; I will give up my studies and be in showbiz. Thankful naman ako na kabaliktaran yung nangyayari sa kanila."

Angelu added, “I guess if they’re really meant to be in show business, kahit na anong edad pa nila [makakapasok sila.]”

Nicole, 14, is in Grade 9 and Louise, 12, is in Grade 7. Angelu’s youngest, Rafa, is one-and-a-half years old.

With her eldest now a teen, the press asked Angelu if Nicole already has suitors.

“Wala pa naman daw," then she laughed as she added, “Dun daw sa kapatid niya parang merong umaaligid.”

From her stories, it was obvious that mother and daughters have open discussions about "boy matters."

Angelu said, “Happy rin lang ako they are able to talk to me about those things. Kasi dati, naaalala ko, kahit crush lang bawal, parang gano’n.

“At least ngayon, yung mga ganyan nadadaan mo sa biro, nae-express na nila ang sarili nila, hindi mo na naitatago, which I really, really like.”

Angelu admitted being quite strict with her kids about spending money. “Pag ano, parang feeling ko may calamity fund, lahat na lang [ng pera] gusto lumabas.

“Tapos siyempre three meals a day ang iisipin mo... As much as possible, I ask what they want. Pero if given na walang choice, they also know na what’s on the table, that’s what they have to eat.”

A MOM TO NEW TEEN STARS. In Pyra: Ang Babaeng Apoy, Angelu plays Merly Lucente, the guardian of the title role, played by newcomer Thea Tolentino.

Thea’s love interest in another newcomer, Jeric Gonzales.

In the PEP interview, Angelu only had good words for the young leads of the teleserye, remarking, “Buti na lang yung mga nakakasama namin mababait.

“Blessed kami na artista na sila. Para silang mga batang di nagmamarunong.”

Elaborating, she said this was probably because the young stars really worked hard to get in showbiz, as compared to newcomers who were immediately given big roles.

“At least napaghirapan nila, they earned the status, which is good. At least humble sila,” Angelu said.

REUNION WITH GLADYS REYES: Angelu shot to fame in the 1990s when she was paired with Bobby Andrews in the TV series T.G.I.S., which also had a hit movie version.

In 1997, she starred in the GMA teleserye Ikaw Na Sana, with Gladys Reyes as the antagonist.

Sixteen years later, she and Gladys were reunited in Pyra.

“In all honesty, there are times natatapos kami ng taping ng 9:00 a.m.," Angelu said about their work together.

“Di namin nakukuhang magsungit kasi gusto naming katrabaho yung isat-isa. I guess yun yung mahirap pag yung katrabaho mo di mo gusto. Parang ang bigat dumating sa set.

“Ngayon excited kami, nagtatanungan kami kasi ang tagal… na miss namin,"Angelu summed up, observing how much have changed in their respective lives.
