A recent sighting of Atom Araullo was at the premiere of the film Barber’s Tales last August 11. It turns out he is also fond of the movies and was at the event to support his good friend Carlo Mendoza, the film's cinematographer.

The intrepid young journalist and TV host Alfonso Tomas “Atom” Araullo has gotten awards for his brand of reporting, particularly for his coverage of the destruction caused by Typhoon Yolanda last year.

Atom also happens to be one of the best-looking reporters in the broadcast industry.

As a matter of fact, he has just been named one of the most eligible bachelors in the country by Town and Country based on a survey conducted by the magazine.

“I don’t think anybody will get used to that kind of thing," the 32-year-old journalist said about the magazine survey. (Philippine Entertainment Portal) had a chance to chat with him at the premiere night of Barber's Tales last August 11.

He admitted being flattered by the attention but he would rather that its focus is on his work and not on his person.

“Flattered, of course, but again, I always say that, the challenge for us, especially for me as a journalist, is to try and make people appreciate the work that I do and also live up to the expectations, I guess."

On the job, his persona changes into someone very serious about things. Is this a conscious effort?

His response, smiling, “I have to be serious for the news just because there are certain topics that you have to take seriously.

"But it’s not such a huge effort on my part. I don’t make it a point to try to look grim and determined all the time.

"So if that’s the perception other people have, I guess it’s because of my work.

"Pero I’d like to reassure them that I’m just a normal person and I enjoy cracking jokes, most of them corny, and I also like laughing at jokes and have a good time also."

On the rumor about him being the “elusive” type, Atom appeared to be in a quandary.

"I don’t know. I wouldn’t say I’m elusive.

"I would say that maybe a little less outgoing than other people.

"I get overwhelmed easily by crowds, especially when there are a lot of people that I don’t know.

"It’s just who I am but I don’t mean anything by that.

"I’m just really shy.

"I don’t make friends easily. [But] when I do make friends, they’re friends for life."

ON RELATIONSHIPS. Being a confirmed heartthrob, PEP had to ask Atom about his take on love and relationships.

“Wala naman, I mean I don’t want to make it sound like it’s such an extraordinary event.

"I mean I’m only human so if you meet the right person and the circumstances are right e 'di there you go."

Is he like a lot of men who shy away from commitment?

“Hindi naman ako nakikisabay sa uso. I’m happy on my own and I don’t have to rely on anyone," he avers.

CELEBRITY CIRCUIT. When asked if he’s interested in joining more celebrity-oriented shows, Atom seemed open to the idea.

He threw in, “Ako naman, I’m a person of many interests.

"Even before I joined the news, I’ve been active doing sports, youth issues.

"I like music a lot, I like, I appreciate art, things like that.

"I just feel like there are so many things going on in this life and it’s fun to explore all of them.

"So hindi naman na bago sa akin kung meron akong gawin na labas sa news. Ibig sabihin, yung mga tao naman sa news, mga tao rin 'yan.

"Marami naman kami gustong gawin, so it really depends on what will happen next."

But as he strongly contends, "First and foremost, I’m a preacher of news, so that’s my mandate."
