Rico Blanco recalls performing when the Philippines hosted the World Youth Day, an annual event initiated by Pope John Paul II: "Nung nag-World Youth Day noong '90s dito sa atin, nakatugtog din ako together with Rivermaya noon...so kung mauulit yun, that would be very meaningful for me."

Talks are going around that former Rivermaya frontman Rico Blanco may perform for Pope Francis during his visit to the Philippines in January.

His Holiness will also hold a mass for Yolanda victims in Tacloban City.

Hailing from Leyte, Rico was one of the local artists who participated in benefit events for the Yolanda victims.

In an interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other press members at Giordano Philippines’ anniversary, he said, “Hindi ko pa alam yung details, e.

"I only heard they were interested in having me there.

"I was just in Tacloban nung anniversary ng Yolanda but I still don’t have the details."

All the same, Rico is grateful that he is being considered for the honor of performing during the Pope’s visit.

“Nung nag-World Youth Day noong '90s dito sa atin, nakatugtog din ako together with Rivermaya noon.

"Fortunately, hindi natapos agad yung event, sobrang daming taong gustong pumasok. So kung mauulit yun, that would be very meaningful for me."

BRAND AMBASSADOR. Aside from humanitarian activities involving music, Rico is also a brand ambassador for Giordano Philippines, and is the main man for the brand’s official campaign song, “World Without Strangers.”

Last November 22, he spearheaded the festivities of its 25th anniversary held in Eastwood Mall’s open park.

“It’s a song inspired by how people are different, we’re all unique, but at the end of the day pare-pareho din tayong lahat.

"So it’s about that. We’re all the same. We all want the same things. We all love the same things.”

The day prior to that, he topbilled the ICON concert together with Yeng Constantino and Gloc-9 at the Araneta Coliseum.

“Masaya, masaya! Happy sa turnout ng mga tao kagabi [November 21].

"Sobra yung pagmamahal nila sa local music and then today, ganun na naman, so grabe, it’s a great weekend.”
