Ten things about motherhood we learned from Jolina Magdangal

Jun 13, 2015
Having another baby is not yet part of Jolina Magdangal's plans as she still has to recover fully from her Caesarian delivery. "CS kasi ako, e. Hanggang ngayon, lalo pag malamig, sumasakit," she says, adding that aside from her busy schedule, she wants to give her full attention to her son Pele.

Jolina Magdangal is now far from the Ang TV star whose psychedelic pants and colorful bangs became all the rage in the ‘90s.

At her launch as one of the brand ambassadors of Calpol, the Kapamilya star told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), “Siyempre ngayon, hindi na ako yung Jolina na dating Jolina.

And how is she so far?

“Ang sarap ng feeling! Itong nangyayari sa ‘kin ngayon.

"May work, happy family... nagpapagawa kami ng sarili naming bahay.

Asked about these “adjustments,” her transition from teen idol to versatile star to devoted wife and mom, she quipped, “Bonggang-bongga!”

She’s been a mom for one year, four months, and one week (she gave birth on February 18, 2014), and what she has learned so far about motherhood she shared at the Calpol event.

PEP. chose some of her cool mommy tips, insights, funny tales, and quite-scary concerns.

1. Mommies, it’s okay to be “praning,” she said.

Her husband Mark Escueta, according to the Kapamilya star, relies on books, "Basa siya nang basa."

She, on the other hand, “Konti lang binabasa ko pero lagi akong nakikipag-usap sa mga first-time mommies din.

And when Pele would show a slight sign of fever, “I get so praning!!!”

But at the event, it was highlighted that “fever is your friend, and is working for and not against your baby.”

It is a sign that the baby’s system is fighting the infection.

Jolina added during the brief program, “At may Calpol!”

2. Be mindful of those little changes in your baby.

“Dahil nga first time, dati may kasama pang luha ‘yan, e. Ngayon, hindi na masyado."

3. Be extra attentive or tell your yaya, “Huwag magpapabaya.”

She related an incident when she had to bring Pele to the emergency room because of “tatlong bilog na blue green sa ulo.”

It happened after the yaya brought him outside her dressing room in Your Face Sounds Familiar.

“Nawala sa paningin ko…Pina-try siyang naglakad.”

Next thing she knew, Pele was “nadapa.”

The trip from ABS-CB’s studio to the hospital was filled with so much anxiety.

“Huwag matutulog, ginigising ko talaga siya,” she recalled, then switching back to her kuwela self, “Pero yung time na yun, inaantok na pala talaga siya. Hahaha.”

4. Do not overshare on social media.

“Parang gusto kong sabihin, ‘Ba’t hindi po ba ako naliligo?’” then she laughed.

6. Baby will easily recognize mommy’s voice and will not forget mommy’s scent.

That’s why when she joined Your Face Sounds Familiar, where impersonated so many singers, Jolina said she didn’t feel any struggle at all while breastfeeding her son.

7. Caring for the baby is not sole mommy's duty.

Jolina related her arrangement with Mark, “Basta kailangan kung may out of town, hindi kami magsasabay.

"Okay ba yung paligid? Meron bang stand-by area?

8. Do not miss a thing.

As much as possible, Jolina does not let the yaya take charge.

"Halimbawa nag-out-of-town sila, three days silang mawawala ng Rivermaya [where Mark is a drummer], ganun minsan.

9. Nope, she’s not yet ready for baby number two (she wants a baby girl).

10. Lastly, have fun!
