The adage "prevention is better than cure" is true for many things in life, including skin care.
This is why former beauty queen Maggie Wilson believes people should start investing in skin care as early as the age of 16.
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) had a quick chat with Maggie about skin care last July 31, Wednesday, at the 10th anniversary party of Organique California held in Conrad Manila, Pasay City.
Like most women, Maggie had brushed off the idea of starting a skin-care regimen when she was younger because visible signs of aging had yet to show.
The 30-year-old celebrity mom reveals that she started taking care of her skin more seriously about five years ago.
She tells PEP.ph, "I only really started taking care of my skin when I hit 25. And honestly, that's too late. I should have started when I was 18 or even 16 'cause, you know, matigas ulo, and I didn't really listen to my mom until I was 25."
According to studies, signs of skin aging—such as fine lines, loss of volume, and loss of skin elasticity—start to manifest as early as age 25.
To fight these skin problems, Maggie makes sure to regularly visit her dermatologist.
The wife of real-estate tycoon Victor Consunji says, "Now, I visit my dermatologist regularly. At least twice a month, just to do facials and non-invasive lifting procedures."
When it comes to her daily skin-care routine, Maggie keeps it simple.
She says, "I also have my day and night routine at home. Just your normal routine, wash your face, tone or moisturize, and that's it."
She does not want anything sticky, too, and prefers "water based" due to the country's humid weather.
Maggie also stressed in her blog that she is not into "whitening creams and products since I love my morena skin."
There is one step in her skin-care regimen that she never skips, as it's also her anti-aging secret.
She reveals to PEP.ph, "I always put sunblock 'cause I'm always in the sun. And sunblock is also a great anti-aging moisturizer. Even if you don't wear moistuizer, but you have your sunblock on, you're good. You're golden."
Maggie takes to her blog to share eight of the skin-care products or "dependables" she uses.
1. Glossier Sunscreen SPF 35
This clear gel, which has a citriusy scent (thank to the sweet orange essential oil!), protects her skin from the sun's UVA/UVB rays and pollution. It has no alcohol or greasy ingredients, and it is an antioxidant complex packed with Vitamin E, Vitamin P, broccoli, and aloe leaf extracts that helps neutralize free radicals inside skin.
Its fermented yeast and vegetal extract supposedly create an invisible barrier that prevents pollution from getting in.
Maggie describes it as "one of the best as it leaves no white cast on your face and is easily absorbed by the skin."
Her tip: Reapply every four hours if possible to ensure extended protection.
According to the brand's website, the product retails for $25 or around PHP1,300.
2. Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser
To cleanse her face, she uses this "incredibly gentle" cleanser twice a day.
Formulated with acne-fighting salicylic acid, chamomile, and aloe vera, it is priced at PHP1,233 at Sephora.ph.
3. La Mer's Moisturizing Soft Cream
A lot of celebrities swear by this weightless moisturizer, which is great for those with combination and dry skin.
Based on the brand's official website, a 2 oz. bottle of this moisturizer costs $335 or around PHP17,500.
4. Olay Regenerist Whip
This moisturizing cream, which costs about PHP1,999, is for wrinkles.
In her Instagram post dated June 26, Maggie writes, "When the weather is this humid using the right moisturiser is vital! When the product is too thick and heavy, I tend to breakout so I really need a super light weight moisturiser that helps mattify my skin but also keeps it hydrated! I’m firm believer in always trying new products because you never know if the next one works even more amazingly well with your skin!"
Maggie adds more steps to her skin-care routine at night.
5. Shu Uemura Anti-Oxi+ Skin Refining Cleansing Oil
The mother of one never goes to bed with her make-up on.
And her top-of-mind choice when removing all traces of products, including the micro-sized impurities, on her face is this "anti-pollutant" cleansing oil.
Priced at PHP2,400, it has extracts from the "3 green trio": green tea, moringa, and papaya.
6. La Mer The Eye Concentrate
To avoid crow's feet and wrinkles on the eye area, which is extra sensitive, the former actress turns to this cream, which significantly reduces the appearance of dark circles, lines, and wrinkles.
According to the brand's website, it's priced at $225 or around PHP11,500.
7-8. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum or Biotherm Life Plankton Mask
Maggie ends her nighttime skin-care routine with a serum or a mask. The former intensely hydrates and significantly reduces lines and wrinkles; the latter aims for smoother and clearler skin.
The Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum is available for $100 or around PHP5,400.
Meanwhile, Biotherm Life Plankton Mask is priced at $56 or around PHP3,000, according to its website.
Her goal, aside from preventing skin problems, is to have a glowing skin even without makeup. As you can see on her Instagram feed, she loves going to the beach, bare-faced.
But before buying any skin-care products, Maggie suggests trying and testing them first.
She writes in her blog, "Always ask for samples when you visit beauty kiosks. Don’t buy a product outright if you’re not sure about it. Trying the samples can help you better decide if the product is a good fit."
