2022 was the year of revenge.
We traveled, celebrated, and simply went out with much gusto. In terms of beauty, we didn’t hold back.
TikTok trends paved the way for so many ways we could wear our favorite make-up looks.
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) talked to celebrity make-up artist (MUA) Jigs Mayuga about five of the major make-up trends that defined 2022.
Jigs is the trusted make-up artist of stars like Shaina Magdayao, Maureen Wroblewitz, and Karylle. He also glammed up Ellen Adarna for her prenup photo shoot with her now husband Derek Ramsay.
He said, "I think beauty is veering towards more natural and wearable looks versus five years ago with the Instagram beauty looks with the carved out brows, overly-contoured cheeks, blinding highlights, and matte liquid lipsticks."
FEATHERED BROWS
As they say: "Kilay is life!"
The "Instagram brow" of 2016 is long forgotten, and now is the era of fluffy, feathery brows.
In case you didn't know, an "Instagram brow," also known as "the fade," is when the inner corner of the eyebrows is barely drawn and gets thicker and more defined towards the other end.
"Feathered brows," as the name suggests, are brushed out and set, and looks natural.
Among its big fans are Anne Curtis, Andrea Brillantes, and Cristine Reyes.

BRONTOURING
Skin was definitely in and many of us replaced the overly-chiseled "Kim Kardashian look" with the "back-from-the-beach" tanned effect of "brontouring."
Brontouring is the technique of "contouring" or sculpting the face to suggest higher cheekbones and defined jawlines using bronzers instead of the usual contour make-up products.
We've spotted this make-up look on Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, Star Magic talent Chie Filomeno, and content creators Marj Maroket and Kai Javier.

MONOCHROMATIC MAKE-UP
With the rise of multi-use products in the beauty world, monochromatic make-up has become the biggest beauty trend of 2022 and it’s a make-up hack that can’t go wrong.
To achieve this look, simply use the same color palette on your lips, eyes, and cheeks.
You can get away with crazy colors but it’s also a dummy-proof way to pair up your products while still looking chic and put together.
For some beauty inspo, check out these monochromatic make-up looks on Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Celeste Cortesi, Miss Universe Philippines 2021 1st runner-up Maureen Wroblewitz, and Kapamilya talent AC Bonifacio.

TRANSLUCENT SKIN
We’re not here for the heavily filtered look with pounds of foundation.
Skin tints and tinted moisturizers dominated our year as we celebrated freckles, normalized skin texture, and just simply let our skin breathe.
Just like how these ladies did it:

LIP STAINS
The “just eaten a popsicle” lip look went well with the four other trends stated above.
It is also the mask-proof compromise between transfer-proof lipsticks and glossy, juicy lips.

What will 2023 look like makeup-wise?
Jigs concluded, “As if we haven’t taken enough fashion and beauty references from the ’90s in 2022, we are looking to the grunge era of rock for make-up inspo in 2023.
Think bold lips and smoky eyes with lots of kohl liner.
"Very much looking forward to these looks we grew up with."
BONUS: PAUL UNATING MAKE-UP TREND
The hashtag #PaulUnatingMakeupLook became a huge trend on social media early this year.
Content creators Teree Daiskua, Miss Nate Makeup, and Kai Javier, among many others, have tried to recreate the viral beauty look on their TikTok accounts.
In an interview with Preview.ph, the 24-year-old make-up artist describes his make-up style as "fresh, glowing face makeup, with a twist on the eyes" taking inspiration from the soft and sweet glam of Thai-style makeup.
Jane de Leon, Ivana Alawi, Kim Domingo, and Jinkee Pacquiao looked like goddesses with Paul's make-up style.
