Food delivery service is heaven-sent in this devilish time of COVID-19 pandemic.
Admittedly, being quarantined has increased our appetite for restaurant foods.
Thankfully, there are many enterprising Pinoys who are venturing in food-delivery service to satisfy our cravings.
One of those is Quezon City-based couple Oyet and Apple Magas.
They started a small food business called Papa Pet Cravings to deliver their own brand of chicken inasal, a favorite family fare.
They have plenty of this juicy, marinated sweet and sour dish grilling in their backyard.
And here's the catch: Their inasal comes out rich in flavor because they broil it using a steel drum.
As if that isn't creative enough, Oyet and Apple have given their bestselling chicken a quirky name—Tanginasal, which sounds pretty much like a superlative expression although it is coined from a cuss in Tagalog.
Apple talked more about Papa Pet Cravings in this interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) on May 29, 2020, via Facebook Messenger.
She wrote back, "The Tang-inasal chicken is a personal recipe of our son chef Nikko.
"Our broiler was designed and fabricated by my husband, Oyet.
"It was his idea to use a drum that would seal in the smoke that would add more flavor to the chicken and make it juicy."
In case you're wondering if their drum is clean and new, Apple assured, "We bought the drum along Commonwealth Avenue for around PHP500."
LAUNCHING PAPA PET CRAVINGS
Apple and Oyet launched their home-based business on March 20, three days after Luzon was placed on quarantine.
The 42-year-old mom recounted, "My husband is working as a mechanical engineer at a five-star hotel in Manila.
"Since his work was affected by the lockdown, we thought of making a small business in order to make money.
"We started with a very small capital—PHP15,000."
Apple and Oyet earmarked their funds to whip up this menu: Chicken Tanginasal (PHP300/whole chicken); liempo inasal (PHP230/half kilo); leche flan (PHP100/tub); Calumpit longganisa (PHP300/kilo); chicharon (PHP100-170); siomai (PHP100-200), and tempura (PHP160-300).
According to Apple, Papa Pet Cravings has yet to show sizeable profits, but she is optimistic about its future.
She continued, "As of now, iyong kinikita namin medyo maliit pa.
"But, before, we started with five chickens per grilling day (Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday).
"Right now, we already have 20 to 35 orders per day.
"We started delivering within our area, Culiat in Tandang Sora, and later on reached as far as Mandaluyong, Pasig, and Novaliches.
"Thank God, okey naman iyong orders. Almost every day we have deliveries.
"Dumadami because of repeat orders from satisfied clients and referrals also."
