How to stay fit like Kathryn Bernardo

Kathryn Bernardo is currently obsessed with core workouts and "in love" with the new 45-minute fitness program "lagree."


Kathryn Bernardo has been going to the gym since she was 18, but it was only recently when the ABS-CBN actress became obsessed with training.

"Before talaga, hindi ako ganito ka-addict sa gym kasi, para for me, ginagawa ko lang siya kasi kailangan," the 23-year-old star told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and a small group of reporters. 

"I started when I was 18. Alam mo yung medyo nagta-transition na yung body mo from being medyo teenager na kailangan mo na siya i-start i-develop para, kapag medyo matanda ka na, you're ready for it."

Kathryn's workout routine consists mostly of two activities: cycling and "lagree."     

She continued, "For me, I love doing core workout. Medyo dun ako medyo nao-obsess... 

"Now, what I enjoy doing are cycling, para for cardio, kasi hindi talaga ako ma-run, hindi ako ma-cardio na tao.

"Nung nag-cycling ako, nag-enjoy ako kasi group kayo, and then may good music, and then mostly girls din. So dun nag-enjoy ako. 

"I do lagree also, sa core and butt naman. Dun ako na-in love sa workout na yun since last year.

"Kasi nakita ko yung pagka-effective niya, and we'll do it for 45 minutes."

Lagree, according to the Makati-based lagree fitness studio, Elev8, is "a patented 45-minute, full-body workout that burns fat and sculpts lean muscles faster than any other fitness program."

Kathryn loves the workout so much that she goes all the way to Makati from Quezon City for the 45-minute fitness program.  

She remarked, "Kailangan mo talaga bigyan siya ng time and effort. Instead of matulog, hindi, mag-gym ka."

At the same time, the young Kapamilya star also trains with Kat Garcia, aka "Mama Kat, who helped Kathryn get ready for her role in the 2018 action-drama series, La Luna Sangre.

The actress said, "She knows my body so well, so nung nag-La Luna, siya yung medyo nag-ayos sa akin.

"And then hanggang ngayon, pag meron ako mga shoot, she's very supportive.

"Memorize na niya body ko, so I chose the right people para tulungan ako. Sila yung nagpu-push sa akin kapag pagod ako and ayoko mag-gym. Sila yung nagpipilit."

How often does Kathryn go to the gym?

"Kung naka-thrice, suwerte na yun kasi super daming schedule," she said. 

"Kung hindi ako nakaka-workout, kinokontrol ko yung food ko na lang."

Mama Kat would also send exercise templates to Kathryn, so she can do these workouts during her spare time.

PEP.ph met up with Kathryn before the launch of her newest makeup collaboration with Happy Skin—a makeup line for active girls, Happy Skin active.

KATHRYN'S BODY GOAL

Five years since she started working out, which part of her body does she want to be more toned?

Kathryn said, "Itong mga sa sides ang pinakamahirap. So that's the goal. Sana ma-achieve natin iyan.

"And then, of course, butt kasi kailangan mo siya i-workout. So, squats, lahat ng booty workout gawin na.

"And then slimmer waist, of course, 'tapos yun. Sana ma-maintain lang.

"So far naman ngayon, medyo happy na ako. Pinakamahirap i-maintain kasi yung sa schedule ko.

"Kung papabayaan ko siya or kung tatamarin ako—kayang-kaya mo itulog lahat. Pero yun yung kailangan labanan, yung pagkatamad."

And then she sighed, "Malayo pa ako! Yes, oh my God."

Can her fans expect to see Kathryn flaunt her toned physique in a bikini OOTD soon?

In good humor, the actress replied, "Feeling ko hindi pa siya ready... wow!

"Pero, yes, of course. Sa ngayon, one piece-one piece muna. Yung two piece, let's see.

"Tatrabahuin ko muna puwet ko."

KATHRYN'S BODY INSECURITIES 

Kathryn was thankful that she started her fitness journey early on, but there were still moments when the young star would feel insecure about her body.

The Star Magic talent said, "Kahit ngayon, alam mo yung parang—kunwari, ang lakas ko kumain.

"Yung sa La Luna, may time dun na, 'Oh my god, nagpupuyat ako 'tapos kain ako nang kain na parang, oh my God, anong nangyari?'

"Then nung bata naman ako, naging problem ko was naging masyado akong payat.

"So, kailangan ko i-build yung muscles na yun para hindi maging stick na isa lang. 

"One of the best decisions yun na nagawa ko na nag invest ako earlier pa para, ngayon, mas mine-maintain mo na lang."

HER FITNESS TIPS

For motivation to get fit, Kathryn had two recommendations based on her own experience.

First, exercise with friends. One of her constant gym buddies is her best friend, Arisse de Santos. 

She also goes to the gym with Ria Atayde, her co-star in the 2018 film The Hows of Us.

Kathryn said, "Kasi sobrang ingay ko pag sa gym, ma-chika, and then pag nahihirapan kami, kasabay ko sumisigaw.

"So usually my best friend Arisse, siya kasama ko saka sina Ria. 

"Sana parating may kasama para na-e-enjoy ko pa rin siya. Parang tinatamad ako kapag isa."

Recently, Kathryn also began working out with boyfriend Daniel Padilla or DJ.

The actress revealed, "Happy ako kay DJ ngayon kasi minsan siya ngayon nag-aaya, 'Tara, gym tayo.'

"Kasi yung ginagawa naman namin ngayon, nagsi-circuit training minsan and then siya, nagba-basketball.

"So, nakaka-proud na nagwo-workout na si DJ konti-konti ngayon."

Her second motivation tip has to do with gym fashion.

She said, "Ito funny, pero bumili ka or mag-invest ka sa nice fitness clothes.

"Kasi for me ginaganahan ako, na-e-excite ako kapag gusto nag-de-dress up for the gym."

As for other fitness and workout tips, Kathryn added, "Choose the right workout for you.

"Hindi kung ano lang yung ginagawa ng iba, kasi ako, may ibang ginagawa friends ko pero hindi talaga siya yung para sa akin. 

"Maybe get a personal trainer, kasi iba rin kapag meron nag-lu-look after sa iyo sa form and everything to avoid injuries."
