Samantha Lopez is glowing at 53.

The actress-dancer celebrated her birthday on October 18.

Her big party, however, took place a day before her special day at the Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong City and was attended by family and friends.

The event dubbed SamLo Cup combined two of Samantha’s passions: golf and charity, with proceeds going to the Kids for Jesus Foundation.

Samantha told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), “Before pa ko nakaisip ng fundraising tournament, I was feeding kids na with Jessica [founder of Kids for Jesus Foundation], who is my best friend. So, bakit pa ako lalayo?

“Alam ko kung ano ang kailangan para sa mga bata, e. We feed hungry and sexually abused children and at the same time, we also teach them the word of God.”

SURVIVING COVID-19

Samantha’s birthday celebration was also an expression of gratitude for keeping her and her loved ones safe from harm throughout the pandemic.

Not that Samantha was spared from the disease. In fact, she contracted the COVID-19 virus twice, with the most recent one happening just weeks back.

She related, “The first time I had COVID was in March 2020. Wala pang vaccine noon."

Then she smiled, saying, "But you know I was blessed kasi talagang health is wealth. As you can see, I work out a lot kaya nga fit na fit at 53.”

Samantha followed the existing health protocols at the time, which consisted of isolating herself for 21 days and avoiding strenuous activities.

“How did I cope? Friends, family, and of course, my faith. If you have faith and trust Him, I guess wala kang mawu-worry.

“Especially at that time kasi lahat paranoid, hindi nila alam kung anong mangyayari, wala tayong alam kung ano ba itong COVID na ito, alam lang natin nakakamatay.

“But if you have faith and if you know you’re healthy, kailangan naman talaga healthy tayo, we got to have discipline,” she pointed out.

Samantha started adopting a healthy lifestyle after seeing a loved one helplesly succumb to cancer several years ago.

She recalled painfully, “Even before COVID naman talaga I had a huge lifestyle change when I saw my dad. He died of cancer.

“I stopped smoking, cold turkey, like right there and then after I got out of the hospital, after seeing him like skin and bones—I changed my lifestyle.”

That lifestyle change includes eating healthily, exercising regularly, and engaging in sports.

This, along with the vaccine, helped Samantha survive her second bout with COVID recently, with only a “scratchy throat” and “sipon” as her only symptoms.

GOING UNDER THE KNIFE

Samantha also revealed going through a medical procedure last June to remove her breast implants.

“For four months hindi ako puwede mag-taping,” confided Samantha, who was last seen in the Kapuso primetime series, First Lady.

“Mahirap kasi maybe sa labas healed na iyong tahi, but inside, and paano kung may eksena na ‘gumapang ka’ o ‘sumipa ka,’ ‘mag ganito ka?'

“Alam mo naman sabihin ko, ‘Direk, hindi ako puwede,’ which I don’t like to do. Hindi nga ako nagpapa- double.

"When you accept a project, walang if, if, if, 200 percent will be given and that’s me.”

Samantha’s decision to remove the implants was for her health and safety.

“Matigas na siya,” she said, referring to the silicone implants that she carried for 22 years.

“I found out na dapat every 10 years pala tinatanggal. It was scary and it was heavy pag nag-gu-golf ako.

“At 53, gusto mo pa ba naman ng perky boobs?” she said in jest.

The good news is, she has since healed and is excited to work again in front of the camera.

“I’m so blessed already. I’m just embracing this life,” said Samantha, who was popularly known in the ‘90s as the round girl named Gracia in Eat Bulaga!’s “Rambulaga” segment.

“We went through a lot, we’re survivors, what’s there to complain? So, just be grateful and happy.”

As for her romantic life, Samantha sounded dismissive.

She declared, “Kung ano na lang ang ibigay ni God. Kasi I lived a good life, na kung may love life pa, icing on the cake na lang. Basta happy ako.”
