GMA-7 actress Andrea Torres arrived in style at Cosmopolitan Philippines' 20th Anniversary Party held at the Black Market, Makati City, last Friday, May 19.
The Kapuso star wore a '90s-inspired but 2017-updated party outfit, and came with friends Sam Pinto and Rona Ofiana.
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) caught up with Andrea after the festivities and talked about her fitness regimen.
After wrapping up her Kapuso primetime drama series Alyas Robin Hood last February, the 27-year-old actress got back to living a more active lifestyle, but with a more cautious approach.
HEAVY METAL DAYS. Andrea had been lifting weights since her early 20s.
However, she was forced to stop and find another routine after suffering from lumbar strain.
"I had a back problem because of that," she recalls.
"Purely weights kasi talaga ako and I was lifting poundages much heavier than me!"
She was later diagnosed with lumbar strain after lifting heavy almost every day.
Because of this, Andrea had to rest and refrain from doing strenuous activities for four to six weeks.
"Di naman bedrest, but there were activities that I wasn't allowed to do.
"Buti na lang di nag-worsen," she says thankfully.
She further explained, "Medyo sumobra ako sa bigat at nag-everyday kasi ako.
"When I like doing something kasi, sobrang ganyan, ini-everyday ko.
"I think the problem was, nag-everyday kasi ako, so walang pahinga!"
Back then, she would spend 1 to 1 1/2 hours at her gym of choice: Ultimate Fitness Gym.
ALTERNATIVE WORKOUT. Since then, Andrea managed to find a less grueling, but equally effective workout.
She learned to embrace new forms of exercise, such as martial arts and circuit training.
Both exercises were both part of preparations for Alyas Robin Hood where she played the role of Venus Altarubio, a martial arts expert and the love interest of Dingdong Dantes' character, Pepe.
"Parang interesting din pala siya, na may boyish side din pala ako," Andrea chuckles.
Andrea was accompanied by a trainer for three years to guide her with her fitness routine.
It was only recently when she started going to the gym without a trainer, after finding a workout buddy in fellow Kapuso star Valeen Montenegro.
She proudly declares, "I now have a gym buddy!
"Recently kasi, nanibago ako pag circuit training—na hindi siya heavy, and mas maraming repetitions.
"So I needed a workout buddy para mas ganahan ako."
"We've been friends before, pero it's just now na lumalabas kami outside of work."
Andrea further noted that they both motivate each other to try different kinds of workout routines.
She adds, "Siya rin, it works better for her na may kasama siya, namu-motivate siya, so we help each other out."
A quick peek at Andrea's social media accounts shows that she still trains quite intensively, but has stopped her heavy lifting.
She points out, "Circuit training, sabay kami, so nape-pressure ka na ayaw mo siya paghintayin.
"If she finishes earlier than you, kailangan matapos mo na!"
Having Valeen around also gives her a lot of positive pressure.
She says eagerly, "Dapat pumunta sa gym, kasi alam mo pupunta siya doon.
"At wala kang excuse na puwede gawin. Kahit tinatamad ka, alam mo naka-commit ka."
Still, Andrea admits to being bitten by the lazy bug from time to time.
To overcome this, she said, "Tumitingin ako ng pictures sa Instagram, yung mga fitspiration, na, 'Okay, I want this, so kailangan tumayo na ako.'"
The Alyas Robin Hood actress is just delighted now that she has learned to train smart.
"I guess di rin dapat pinu-push yung katawan that much," she explained.
"So ngayon, mas nag-focus ako sa circuit [training], boxing, Muay Thai, mga weapons, kasiI think naging influence na rin ng role ko in Alyas [Robin Hood]."
Andrea said she won't be getting into any other sports anytime soon, although she keeps herself open to new workout ideas that she might find interesting.
She admitted, "Wala pa naman ako naiisip, pero feeling ko I'm open to anything right now, parang mas naging active ako right now."
