Dandruff, or balakubak, is a common condition where the skin on the scalp itch and flake off. Although mild and noncontagious, having dandruff can be diyahe – especially when those pesky snow-like flakes drift down to your clothes.

But what causes dandruff, really? Is it, as many might believe, poor hygiene?

Medical experts in the United States and the United Kingdom say that poor hygiene does not cause dandruff, although it can cause the condition to be more obvious.

These factors are said to have an effect on the scalp:

  • Not shampooing enough
  • Cold, dry weather
  • Stress
  • Irritated and oily or dry skin
  • Fungal infection
  • Sensitivity to hair products
  • Skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema

Aside from these, medical experts point to a few risk factors that can make a person more susceptible to dandruff. Among them, age, gender, and certain illnesses, particularly those that affect the nervous system and immune system, like Parkinson’s disease and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).

The diagnosis of dandruff is best left to a dermatologist, who will be able to determine the severity of the condition and recommend the appropriate treatment.

For now, to help you manage the condition at home, do the following:

1. MANAGE STRESS.

Try not to dwell on things that give you stress. Take deep and calming breaths, pause, or even step away for a moment. Stress does not only cause dandruff to flare up, but it also affects your overall health and well-being.

2. LIMIT THE USE OF STYLING PRODUCTS.

Serums, oils, gels, mousses, and the like can make your hair look sleek and soft, but applying too much can also cause buildup on your hair and scalp. Use them sparingly.

3. ADOPT A HEALTHY DIET.

Yes, it turns out that food helps improve the condition of the scalp. Medical experts recommend consuming food rich in zinc, like whole grains, milk products, and red meat; B-vitamins, like dark, leafy vegetables and citrus fruits; and “healthy fats” like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids found in fish and vegetable oils, respectively. Another also advised cutting back on sugar, eating more fruits and vegetables, and food rich in biotin like eggs, tomatoes, and carrots.

4. SHAMPOO YOUR HAIR ACCORDINGLY.

Contrary to popular belief, the frequency of washing the hair isn’t one-size-fits-all. This means that just because washing hair every day or once every two or three days works for one person doesn’t mean it will also work for you.

Generally speaking, experts say people with very fine hair, who exercise and sweat a lot, and who live in a very humid place need to wash their hair daily. Remembering this might also help: the thicker the hair and less oil, the less it needs to be shampooed.

5. USE SHAMPOOS AND TREATMENTS THAT SPECIFICALLY TARGET DANDRUFF.

There are many types of dandruff shampoos in the market, but remember that they’re not all the same and contain different anti-dandruff actives. So, before grabbing that bottle of dandruff shampoo, always read the label to ensure that it is right for the condition that affects your scalp. Don’t forget to use it as instructed on the bottle, too.
