Sa panahon ngayon, nagiging mas maingat tayo sa sarili natin.

We wash our hands regularly to wash off dirt and bacteria. We drink lots of water, eat well-balanced meals, exercise, and get enough sleep to help strengthen our immune system.

Pero pagdating sa ating katawan, are we doing enough? Sa feminine area, sapat at tama ba ang pag-aalaga natin?

Maraming kababaihan ang marahil nag-iisip na hindi nila kailangan ng feminine wash to clean the area down there.

There are many possible reasons for it: puwedeng hindi available ang feminine wash sa kanilang suking tindahan o kaya hindi pasok sa budget nila ang pagbili nito.

Maari rin namang kuntento na sila with their usual body soap, or they simply are not aware of the benefits of using a wash na ginawa specifically to address the needs of the intimate area. (Philippine Entertainment Portal) reached out to an expert: Dr. Lorelee Reyes Vicente, an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN).

Ayon kay Dr. Vicente, women ideally should start using feminine wash as early as their teens because this product is capable of addressing one’s ever-changing needs down there.

Ipinaliwanag din niya kung ano ang pagkakaiba ng feminine wash sa regular soap, kung paano kumilatis at pumili ng feminine wash, at kung paano alagaan nang tama ang intimate area. Keep reading.

A woman’s vagina is capable of cleaning itself sa pamamagitan ng pag-produce ng isang uri ng fluid na nagbibigay-proteksyon laban sa infections. It is the vulva, o yung exposed area na una mong nakikita whenever you look down there, that needs regular cleansing.

Sabi ni Dr. Vicente talagang mahalaga ang proper feminine hygiene.

“And by proper, I mean the usage of feminine wash. As its name implies, it is specially made to nurture sensitive needs down there,” she said.

Dr. Vicente further explains: “[Feminine washes have] antibacterial components that prevent the building up of harmful pathogens, which is the leading cause of foul smell; hence, its property to take away foul odor.”

Tandaan na unlike feminine washes, most body soaps use alkaline na maaaring harsh at irritating sa feminine area.

“In terms of frequency in using a feminine wash, at least three times a day is recommended,” ani Dr. Vicente.

For example: Puwede kang gumamit ng feminine wash kapag naligo sa umaga, when you refresh in the afternoon, at sa pagligo bago matulog sa gabi.

It’s important to take care of the feminine area to protect the vagina. At ang pag-aalaga na ito ay nagbabago as women grow older.

“Washing from front to back is ideal to avoid infestation of [poop] to the vaginal area,” Dr. Vicente explained, adding, “Children must also be guided while playing to avoid struggle injuries and possible penetration of foreign objects as they are naturally curious.”

Meanwhile, teens and younger women are advised to use feminine wash. Ayon kay Dr. Vicente, “This is at this stage where the vaginal canal becomes active due to cyclic menstruation, sexual activity, and pregnancy.”

Likewise, mature women and those nearing menopausal age should still use feminine wash para maiwasan ang panunuyo sa feminine area.

“The goal of feminine wash at this stage is more of moisturization as vaginitis (or inflammation of the vagina) is commonly caused by friction due to vaginal dryness,” paliwanag ni Dr. Vicente.

Women have different needs and sensitivities. Ibig sabihin nito, your body may react to a product differently from how another woman’s would.

But generally speaking, Dr. Vicente pointed out the following as important characteristics of a good feminine product:

Has a pH level of 5

The vaginal fluid is acidic, which means it is at a pH level of 3.8 to 4.2, according to Dr. Vicente. Similarly, the pH level of the skin ranges from 4 to 7.

Kaya naman dapat pumili ng feminine wash with a pH level of 5, which is closer to the pH levels of the vaginal fluid and the skin. Sa ganitong paraan, you don’t risk messing with the natural environment of your intimate area, and your skin can continue to fight harmful microbes.

“[Having] a pH level of 5 is a perfect quality of a good feminine wash,” diin ni Dr. Vicente.

A good feminine wash should also be antibacterial para ma-protektahan ang feminine area from “bad pathogens that cause foul odor,” as Dr. Vicente described it.

Dapat na hypoallergenic rin ang feminine wash to avoid irritating the sensitive feminine area. It should also have a gentle formula that's also moisturizing to help keep the skin soft and smooth.

Some harmful ingredients to avoid include salicylic acid, retinoic acid, parabens, and other harsh chemicals.

Gynecologically tested

Dr. Vicente explains: “For a product to be proven safe and effective, it must undergo a series of tests under a panel of experts. A seal of ‘passing’ these tests must be present [on the product].”
