Coco Martin reveals a rare peek into his life outside of showbiz

This is what the king of teleseryes likes to do on his days off.
Dec 7, 2018

An accomplished actor, director, and producer, Coco Martin is no stranger to the limelight. Nonetheless, the star of the longest-running teleserye in Philippine primetime television confesses to loving the simple things in life—particularly gardening and spending time with his family.

Given his hectic showbiz schedule, Coco shares that vacations are mostly spent at his home in Quezon City. “Sa bahay lang ako,” he says, “ini-enjoy ko kumain ng mga hinahain ni Lola…at saka quality time [kasama] mga kapatid ko at lalo na mga pamangkin ko.”

The 37-year-old actor explains that everyone in his family are huge foodies, thanks to his grandmother who loves to cook. “Si Lola ang expert sa pagkain,” he points out. “Halos lahat kami marunong magluto.”

Sinigang, he reveals, is his specialty. But for breakfast, he and his family have fairly simple tastes. “Almusal namin ay sardinas, pandesal, sinangag. Minsan may hotdog or daing at tuyo. At saka may kape,” he shares.

As for their favorite breakfast dish? “Argentina Corned Beef—na may sibuyas,” he says, noting that they like their corned beef cooked simply, with not a lot of embellishments.

Aside from bonding over food, the Ang Probinsyano actor shares that they also love hanging out at his home’s pool. Now that he’s busy with work, he says that he doesn’t have enough time “[na] tumambay lang at makipagkwentuhan sa pamilya at mga kaibigan.”

Coco also keeps busy during days-off by tending to his vegetable garden, something he decided to do because of a simple yet practical reason: “Sayang ang bakanteng lupa.”

“Masarap magtanim at umani, [tapos] diresto luto,” he shares. He grows a variety of vegetables in his home garden, like upo, eggplant, ampalaya, and tomato, among others.

The self-confessed homebody also looks for a little adventure when his schedule permits it. His two passions? Off-road driving and playing Airsoft.

Coco also says that he’d like to travel more, noting that Boracay is on top of his travel bucket list. “Wish ko makapunta doon,” he muses. But this foodie insists that even vacation trips are reserved for rest—and eating. “Hindi ako mahilig mag-shopping.”

But the one thing this busy actor would really like to do when he’s on a break is something many of us can relate to—“Tulog lang, please.”
