Throughout the ups and downs of her career, Jessy Mendiola has managed to stay on track by managing her earnings judiciously.

As a breadwinner, she knows the importance of saving her talent fees for her family.

The 27-year-old actress-entrepreneur talks about being the family's breadwinner in a video uploaded on YouTube on May 5, 2020.

"As some of you may know, hindi ako galing sa mayamang pamilya. Breadwinner ako," she says.

"Since bata pa ako, nagtrabaho na ako. I started doing modeling, commercials since I was three years old, and I have supported my family.

Aside from being in a very competitive industry, Jessy is aware of the uncertainty of not knowing when to expect their next project.

This makes her job "mahirap," as Jessy continues, "Siguro iyong iba nag-iisip na 'Hmph, artista naman siya, celebrity naman siya, malakas naman siyang kumita.'

"Our job pays really well, pero since very erratic iyong trabaho namin, hindi rin ganoon kadali.

"Kumbaga, sa industriya kasi ng showbiz, one day you’re hot, one day you’re not anymore...

"When it rains it pours, pero pag wala, wala talaga."

"Kunwari sa akin, katatapos ko lang ng show ko, nakakapag-ipon ako, and kaya ko pang mag-go on sa mga susunod na buwan, [pero] sana magka-work ako," Jessy says.

In her Instagram post uploaded the same day, she remarks, "It’s very important for someone like me to handle my earnings well and to save...

In her YouTube video, Jessy enumerates her tried-and-tested tips in saving up for the future.

TIP #1: SET ASIDE FIVE TO TEN PERCENT OF YOUR MONTHLY INCOME

It is a must for Jessy to save as much as she can whenever she has a project.

"It doesn't matter how big or small, ang importante, meron," she says in her video.

But for starters, the Kapamilya actress suggests setting aside at least five to ten percent of your monthly salary.

She details, "Kunwari, kumikita ka ng PHP10,000.

"So siyempre, sa PHP10,000, marami kang kailangan bilhin, marami kang kailangan bayaran, maraming kang kailangang ibigay.

TIP #2: KNOW WHERE TO SPEND YOUR MONEY

Jessy says this starts with reexamining your spending habits.

She admits to being an emotional shopper, using shopping as a pick-me-up when she's feeling down.

For her, this is a habit that needs to change.

She explains, "Example going out, shopping online, kailangan alam mo kung saan mo igagastos ang pera mo.

She also suggests being conscious of your spending habits when you're out with people.

She elaborates, "Meron kasi akong time dati na sobrang gastos ko.

"I had friends before—ex-friends. Pansin ko, parating ako ang gumagastos.

"Gabi-gabi, hala, gimik kami, inom kami.

"Learn how to spend wisely with your friends."

TIP #3: INVEST in A BUSINESS THAT SUITS YOUR PASSION

Another way that Jessy grows her money is through her businesses, whose funds come from her earnings in showbiz.

The actress states, "You should learn how to save and at the same time, alam mo kung saan mo ilalagay iyong savings na iyon.

"Pagdating ng savings na iyon, mag-invest ka on something na you know you will pursue."

In 2019, Jessie opened her first retail business, Señorita, which specializes in classy beachwear and trendy bags.

She also co-owns a perfume business named Lucky and Lulu, with her boyfriend Luis Manzano.

Her most recent project is a collaboration with jewelry shop Radiant Jewelry, which is owned by her friend Marnique Del Rosario.

Jessy says this project breathed new life into her love for making and selling accessories, which she enjoyed doing when she was younger.

She recounts, "Like ako, I have a new venture, it's about jewelry, gemstones... It's been a dream of mine to start a jewelry line.

TIP #4: BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR MONEY GOALS

Jessy also keeps her finances intact by segregating her money according to her goals.

"Like ako, I want to have a family, I want my kids to pursue what they really want in life not because they have to support the family.

To do this, Jessy suggests dividing your income into three: savings, expenses, and luxuries.

For savings, the actress recommends opening a time deposit account.

A time deposit is similar to a savings account, only that you won't be allowed to withdraw your deposited money for a specific amount of time, so that it would earn interest.

Jessy explains, "You'll deposit a certain amount 'tapos hindi mo siya gagalawin muna, 'tapos pagdating ng time na 'tapos na iyong term niya, malaki na rin iyong naipon mo sa time deposit na iyon kasi malaki na rin iyong interest na nakuha."

For the expenses part of your salary, she describes, "Dito, dito ko lalagay lahat ng papasok at lalabas na pera.

And for the last part, "Dito ko kukunin ang aking mga luho."

She adds, "Oo, guys, dapat hiwalay iyon.

Tip #5: SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT YOUR GOALS

Showbiz taught Jessy to be a wais spender and investor.

But the actress-entrepreneur also has her family, boyfriend Luis, and friends to thank for her money smarts.

"Real friends and people who love you will be able to help you," Jessy said.

"Like me for example, my family, my friends, si Luis, alam nila na minsan magastos ako kapag masama ang loob ko.

"They're actually helping you to save and not to buy the same thing over, and over again...

Jessy also believes that a better way to be a big saver is actually encouraging your friends to do likewise.

Of course not.

"But you should be the one to help him or her na magkaroon ng same goals as you have."
