Heart Evangelista on self-expression through her art pieces: "You know, I'm a normal person. When you look at my Instagram, you won't see my sadness...As a normal person, we experience all these things, and sometimes you have to do something to lift yourself up, and this is what inspires me."

At 32, Heart Evangelista proves that it’s possible to keep expanding her horizons by pursuing her passion for art.

From painting intricate flowers and dreamy female portraits on a canvass, the Kapuso actress has made her hand-painted artworks visible on Hermes bags, Mark Bumgarner gowns, and most recently Philux furniture.

"I’m still a work in progress, but that’s the beauty of art," Heart told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) yesterday, March 23, at SM Mega Fashion Hall.

As part of SM Megamall’s special tribute to Women’s Month, some of her paintings are presently on display.

Growing up, Heart recalled that she has always been into arts.

"I started to paint ever since I was a little girl. I would paint on our walls when I was young. I would scribble on magazine covers, parang mini-makeup-an ko sila," she said.

But it was her toughest life experiences that made her take painting more seriously.

"It got really serious four or five years ago. I was going through so much in my life. I wouldn’t touch on that anymore.

"But it was very therapeutic for me. I didn’t paint for anybody else.

"Of course, being an artista, you think na you always have to please everyone—kailangan magustuhan ka nila, kailangan parati kang maganda.

"But with painting, I felt that I was just pleasing myself. It was a release for me.

"Hindi ko akalain na ma-a-appreciate rin siya ng iba.”

Dubbed as Heart & Style by Love Marie, the actress' art exhibit at SM Mega Fashion Hall’s activity center will run until March 28.

"I kinda gave people a sneak peek of my 2018 collection which is Love Marie in Full Bloom.

"So some of the paintings here will be featured next year pa.

"I also have some of my hand-painted Hermes bags."

She added, "I also want people to see up close my collaboration with Mark Bumgarner from last year’s collection."

Heart and Mark grew close after he designed the wedding reception dress that Heart wore in Balesin two years ago.

It was during one of their casual conversations about designing bags and shoes when Mark unexpectedly asked her: “You know what, why don’t you paint on my dress?”

Heart fondly recalled, "So right away he gave me his address. He said, ‘Let’s just play around.’

"So I started to paint and he liked it. We made a dress."

Heart's fear then was that she would ruin the dress.

"I was very nervous because kailan lang siya nag-paint on it. It was an actual dress, he spent money for it, so I couldn’t make a mistake.

"So I painted on it, and he liked it. We kept doing it and we made fifteen painted gowns for a show.

"We designed a nice show. It was called When Art Meets Fashion.”

Asked how she feels about inspiring fellow women with her art and style, Heart said that it starts with embracing one’s strengths and weaknesses.

"Of course, it’s nice that people look at me that way, to inspire them a bit.

"It’s not easy. I had to go through a lot in my life. Ang dami kong pinagdaanan to be who I am today.

"But I have no regrets. And that’s how people should think.”

Painting has become another avenue for Heart where she can translate her “negative emotions or frustrations” into something that brings out the best in her.

"You know, I’m a normal person. When you look at my Instagram, you won’t see my sadness. You won’t see what I’m going through or my problems. I’ll never post them there.

"As a normal person, we experience all these things, and sometimes you have to do something to lift yourself up, and this is what inspires me.

"I’m used to expressing myself with my emotions because I am an actress.

"So, I thought it would be the same with painting. You create something that’s from your mind."
