What you should know about the vaccine...
The first vaccine against dengue is called Dengvaxia.
Created by Sanofi Pasteur, it took more than 20 years to develop and test it, 25 clinical studies in 15 countries, and 40,000 volunteers.
The tests and results have been studied and recommended by World Health Organization.
As of February 2017, the vaccine has been approved in 14 countries where dengue is endemic including Mexico, Brazil, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Guatemala, Peru, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines.
The dengue vaccine has the endorsement of the Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) and Philippine College of Physicians (PCP).
It can be administered on people aged 9 to 45 years old, and has to be taken in three doses at 0-6-12 months interval.
It can protect the individual from all four strains of the dengue virus, but its full efficacy takes effect after the three doses.
The effectivity period of the vaccine has yet to be determined.
But according to Dr. Rontgen Solante, past president of PSMID, there has not been any incidence from those who were given the vaccine two years ago.
Starting on April 30, it will be available in more than 100 stores of Watsons nationwide.
Take note of these schedules:
April 30- first dose; October 29, 20170- second dose; April 29, 2018- third dose.
May 14- first dose; November 12, 2017- second dose; May 13, 2018- third dose.
It will cost PHP 4000 per dose, which is a small price to pay for your protection and peace of mind.
