Jessy Mendiola: "It's so sad na, really, the physicality na lang ba ang importante?"

Every summer, having a “bikini body” almost sounds like a necessity for you to properly enjoy the beach.

Granted, people have always been fixated on this “summer goal.”

But not Jessy Mendiola.

In the previous years, she admitted to feeling a bit pressured for the season, then she eventually changed her stance to a resounding “no.”

The reigning FHM’s Sexiest Filipina told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in a recent interview at the launch of celebrity chef Nadine Tengco’s book Sexy at Any Age, “If I want to go to the beach, then I’ll go to the beach!”

When the men's magazine hailed her as the sexiest woman in the land, Jessy found the opportunity to give a new perspective on our mental model for “sexy.”

FACING HER INSECURITIES. Truth be told, being a celebrity only magnifies these insecurities, and people take time to nitpick on each one.

“I have so much insecurities. I can’t even begin with one,” the Kapamilya star began.

“It is not easy na always nasa spotlight kayo.

“Lahat ng suot mo, lahat ng itsura mo—weight gain, weight loss mo, lahat!

“Laging tinitignan, laging pinupuna.

“I mean, like, come on, there are different types of bodies.

“Parang, hindi naman tayo puwedeng iisa lang ang itsura natin.

“It’s not supposed to be palaging iisa yung look nating lahat o iisa lang perception natin sa isang bagay.

“So, can you like, let a girl live?”

At the same time, Jessy knew that part of this pressure had also been internal.

“Kalaban mo is yourself because you’re always putting so much pressure on yourself.

“'Tapos parang kung ano lang ang konting sabihin ng mga tao, you would take it to heart.

“In my age, you would always try to please others.”

With the constant pressure of “looking good” or “being sexy,” Jessy pointed out the harsh reality that comes out from it.

“Did you know, sa panahon ngayon, ang dami-daming mga teens…they kills themselves, give themselves a hard time kasi masyado na tayong superficial, masyado na tayong nagpupuna ng isang tao?

“We don’t know how much it affects them, and it’s really hard.

“It’s so sad na, really, the physicality na lang ba ang importante?”

ACCEPTANCE AND SUPPORT. Apart from choosing to accept your flaws as a part of your whole character, Jessy suggested that it would be good to have a go-to person to openly talk about your worries.

Thanks to celebrity chef Nadine Tengco, “she’s my stress-reliver,” Jessy said.

“She would always ask me what’s bothering me or what’s stressing me out. Why am I such in a hurry? Why am I always running around and beating myself up for not achieving this or that at the right time?

“Ganun siya.”

Nadine Tengco knew firsthand what it felt like to be shamed for what you looked like.

In fact, that’s the reason why Jessy was chosen to be one of her cover girls for her book.

In a separate interview with PEP, Nadine recalled her younger years when she was slut-shamed.

“I have stories. I have journeys going through that that I wanted to tell, and they were the people who resembled my story.

“At that age, I was a bohemian. I stuck out like a sore thumb.

“I was misunderstood.

“I wasn’t body-shamed, but I was slut-shamed.

“So parallel, what we went through.”

Having a person to talk to, Jessy was grateful to have Nadine by her side.

Jessy resumed, “What’s really nice with her is she really sits down and takes her time to talk to you and analyze your problem.

“Hindi lang niya papakinggan, she really finds a way to solve it.
