DZBB radio anchor Jimmy Gil has advice to senior dads like him with new babies, "Stay healthy. That's very basic."

DZBB anchor Jimmy Gil has been married for about seven years to his second wife when something unexpected happened.

Last year, his better half—who was 39 years old then—told him she was pregnant.

Jimmy told (Philippine Entertainment Portal), “I already have five kids, all of them married. I have grandchildren.

“My wife and I have been living quite a normal life, I mean, at our age and for almost a decade, it’s like we already have this routine.

“So when I heard she was pregnant. I didn’t really expect it.”

HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? Though not utterly impossible for men, having a baby at 70 is not also a normal occurrence.

At the presscon of Enduranz capsule earlier, August 8, Dr. Emil Aligui said that as men reach his mid-30s, the motility of his sperm declines.

"It's like one out of 6,000,000 sperm gets to meet the egg...

"But by age 80, only about 15 to 20 percent of testosterone remains."

According to the doctor, the hormone is important to men because it "maintains muscle mass, bone density, and the sex drive."

To boost it, one needs to have enough sleep, watch his weight, and take Zinc.

In the case of Jimmy, he leads a healthy lifestyle.

"I brisk walk every day. I do 10,000 steps with my watch.

"Aside from the regular exercise, I’m conscious of my diet. I do not deprive myself. I eat every thing in moderation.

"Most importantly, I sleep as early as possible..."

DADDY DUTIES. But now that he has a 10-month-old baby, "I wake up...when she cries in the middle of the night, nagtuturuan na kami ng misis ko," he said, smiling.

In jest, he added, "Minsan nagpapatay-patayan ako. The baby kasi sleeps in the middle.

"Buti nga hindi na perdible [safety pin] ngayon. Dati, inaantok ka, perdible yung gamit sa lampin."

Lately though, there have been more early morning jolters than sleepless nights.

Lucky for Jimmy, his wife is a hands-on mom and they've worked out a suitable routine.

"She doesn’t want yaya. She’s a lawyer, she has her consultancy job, so 24 hours halos, siya bantay.

"Substitute ako when she goes to the gym.

"So if I have an appointment in the morning, at 8 o’clock, I have to cancel it.

"Kasi nasa gym siya, ako ang nagya-yaya—without pay, ha."

What if he feels sleepy?

"I carry her, meron kaming rocking chair na may kutson.

"Pag naka-lean kami, natutulog din siya. But I have to be conscious baka mahulog."

ENJOYING FATHERHOOD. It took Jimmy about "nine months" before he could fully grasp that he's a new daddy.

He said, "Yes, it was actually the farthest thing from my mind... Magiging tatay na ulit ako."

The minute Baby Anna Cristina was born, "Her presence changed my daily life."

Showing the picture of his baby, he proudly said, "Siyempre kamukha ko."

He continued, "Kumbaga, there's something to look forward to each day."

His situation is no different from first-time dads.

"I have made some adjustments. All the activities. At siyempre, yung energy mo, dapat meron para sa baby.

"Gradually, we started saving, planning for her schooling. We made plans.

"But I am enjoying."

Does he and his wife still have their date nights?

"Medyo nakakalibre kami pag weekends. That's when the lola takes over. Medyo nakakalabas-labas kami."

What's his advice to senior dads like him?

"Ito, para sa lahat ng tatay or mag-asawa, see to it that both of you are ready.

"Kasi ako, admittedly, second marriage ko, my first wife passed away, medyo na-shock din ako.

"Kailangan meron na kayong mindset, which I didn’t have at first.

"You have to accept the fact na may anak ka na, settle down, make time for my child."

He underlined, "Stay healthy. That’s very basic."

NO MORE CRAMPS. Guys his age normally slow down, and Jimmy does take care of his health.

"When I took that capsule, it was for my overall health. I used to experience nocturnal cramps kasi.

"Sa gabi, kapag natutulog ako, when I stretch my legs, especially my left leg, nagha-harden.

"When it advertised on my show, I was given samples, I gave them away to my friends.

"That was more than two years ago."

The next time he saw his friends, "Sinasabi nila sa akin, 'Jim, we feel better na. Yung ganito sa siko ko, nawala yung pain.'

He said he started taking the capsule out of curiosity, "And then, gradually, nawala yung nocturnal cramps ko."

He stressed, "Gradual ha, siguro mga two months."

The rest, as they say, is history.
