An avowed pet lover, Coleen Garcia makes sure her beloved dogs will have a participation in her wedding to Billy Crawford that has been set in the summer of 2018 at a members-only island resort in Quezon province.
The Kapamilya actress, who turns 24 on September 24, has two favorite dogs, Summer and Bambi, which are both Chihuahua.
Summer is barely a year old, and she serves as Coleen’s constant companion.
“Pati sa tapings, sa movie shoot,” said the star of the daytime soap Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin.
“Basta puwede, dala ko siya.”
Summer was around during her recent endorsement shoot for the Filipino makeup brand Happy Skin, where this writer had the chance to interview Coleen.
“Puyat din siya sa taping,” she added, laughing. “May eyebags na nga, e!”
Bambi, on the other hand, is 16 years old, and she’s been with Coleen’s family since she was nine years old.
“She’s blind, she’s deaf, she can only smell a little bit,” Coleen said of Bambi.
The beautiful bride-to-be then looked back on her younger days.
“Ever since bata pa ako,” she recalled, “I would always get scared kasi nag-10 years old na siya, ’tapos 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16…
“So every time, I’d whisper to her since a long time ago, and I’d tell her to at least wait until she could give me away on my wedding day.”
“Binubulong ko sa kanya ’yon every time, like, nanghihina siya or nagkakasakit siya,” she added, grinning. “Binubulong ko talaga sa kanya na antayin niya naman na maipamigay niya ako sa wedding ko.”
A look of concern appeared on her almost-flawless face as she tried to figure out how her canine pals would walk on the sandy beach.
“We’ll see, gagawan na lang ng paraan,” she said, sighing.
PET CARE. Aside from Summer and Bambi, she also has a Keeshond named Buddy.
There are also two big dogs—a Presa Canario and Belgian Malinois—that stay outside her and her family’s home to serve as their guards.
Coleen also has two cats, and she had her fiance Billy in mind when she chose her feline friends.
“Sphynx kasi si Billy is allergic to cats,” she explained. “So ang puwede lang talaga sa kanya is Sphynx, ’yong walang balahibo. Kasi ’yon ’yong pinaka-low allergic risks.”
She went on sharing how she takes good care of her pets.
“I talk to them like they’re people,” she pointed out. “And I feel that makes them smarter also.
“That makes them more understanding when it comes to your tone kasi actually ’yong mga dogs, hindi sila nakikinig sa words. Mas nakikinig sila sa tono ng boses mo.
“Kung galit ka, alam nilang galit ka. Kung sad ka, alam din nila. Kung natutuwa ka, and you want to play, alam din nila.
“Pero ’yon, it’s also important to feed them the right food. Ako, ’yong pinapakain ko sa pets ko, ’yong human grade, very safe for pets.
“Kasi siyempre, kung gaano ako kaarte sa pagkain ko at sa health ko, dapat gano’n din sa pets ko.
“So ’yong food nila, grass-fed ’yong meat at free range, healthy pa rin talaga.”
And her healthy choices are paying off, Coleen said beaming, as she gestured towards Summer.
“Pag hinawakan mo ’yong fur ni Summer, sobrang soft niya,” she proudly said. “Very healthy. Hindi na sila nagva-vitamins kasi pinipili ko ’yong food na nando’n na lahat ng kailangan nilang vitamins.”
