"Social media is beautiful and people should stop abusing it."

This was ABS-CBN actress Maris Racal's battle cry regarding the proper way of using social media which she posted on Twitter last March.

The 20-year-old former Pinoy Big Brother housemate has always been championing ethical use of social media among her peers and followers.

Maris has personally experienced the downside of social media when hundreds of netizens made fun of her photo from a performance with Kira Balinger, Andrea Brillantes, Ylona Garcia, and Loisa Andalio for the Kapamilya network's Sunday variety show ASAP early last May.

Her photo sparked hundreds of memes which sprung around different social media sites.

Maris admitted that the negative comments took a toll on her confidence.

However, the Star Magic talent eventually learned "the art of dedma" and made sure that these comments wouldn't go to her head.

She told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the press in an earlier interview, "Wala, e, if you just laugh at it, parang nawawala na rin ang consciousness."

PEP.ph caught up with Maris last Thursday, November 9, at Sperry's 7 Seas, 7 Styles party at Ibiza Beach Club in Bonifacio Glocal City, Taguig.

The ASAP singer-performer listed down some of her do's and don'ts when it comes to using social media.

She narrated, "Posting too much. Posting where I'm currently at.

"Huwag mag-reply sa bashers at makipag-meddle sa issues."

Maris refrains from reacting to anything negative using her social media, but the Kapamilya star noted that she makes an extra effort to use it as a platform to communicate with her fans, mostly on Twitter.

She said, "Of course, I talk to them more on Twitter kasi bihira lang talaga ako nag-o-open ng Instagram, more on Twitter talaga ako.

"So I talk to my fans and I try to reply to them."

When asked how she curates her photos for her Instagram account, Maris said she prefers to have it authentic.

She explained, "Actually wala akong pattern, wala akong feed goals. Kung ano lang yung gusto ko, mas nag-post lang ako ng memories."
