Most celebrity kids unwittingly ride on the coattails of their famous parents when they enter showbiz.

While some of them don't really don't make such a big fuss about it, a few others try their best to step out of their parents' shadows and strive to carve their own niche.

Iana Bernardez, the eldest daughter of Angel Aquino, has her reasons for choosing her dad's surname when she starred in the 2018 film Gusto Kita With All My Hypothalamus.

"I’m happy na Bernardez is my last name,” she said at the launch of QCinema 2019 on September 24.

Her reason: “Hindi automatic na kay mommy. It’s nice to be able to present yourself as an individual rather someone always attached to a whole different person."

She continued, “Like in Hypothalamus, natuwa ako na Bernardez ang gamit ko. It was only after people came out of the cinema that they know that I’m Angel’s daughter.

“I don’t mind being called my mom’s daughter, but, of course, it’s nice for me to establish myself as an individual.”

Iana is the older of Angel’s two children, who are both girls.

The younger daughter, Thea, studies Film at the College of Saint Benilde, and intends to specialize in cinematography.

ACTING TIPS FROM MOM ANGEL AQUINO

Acting-wise, the newbie actress shared a few lessons she learned from her much experienced senior, who calls her by her nickname, Yana.

“Kasi ang hirap pala umiyak—on cue,” Iana said.

“So she would just teach me to relax, to not to put so much pressure on myself and to remember that I’m learning pa lang.

“Kasi siyempre at the back of my mind, when the director knows na mommy ko si Angel Aquino, and she’s well respected in the industry, I fell sort of pressured. Sana matutunan ko maging gano’ng klaseng artista, katulad ng nanay ko.

“Pero pinapaalala ng mommy ko na, ‘Yana, ako, ilang years na ’ko sa industry. Ikaw, nagsisimula ka pa lang. Magulat ka talaga kung it’s as if you’re acting na ang tagal mo na.’

“Parang, ‘Give yourself a chance. Give yourself a break. Give yourself time.’ ’Yon ang pinapaalala niya sa akin.

“Whenever I have a hard scene, no fail, I will call her, and I will tell her. Automatic, I’ll feel comforted and confident about how to do it.”

As a child, Iana never felt obligated to watch Angel’s projects, but as an adult today, she has learned to appreciate and admire her mother’s work.

She mentioned the coming-of-age movie Ang Huling Cha-cha in Anita (2013) as her favorite.

“Nakaka-proud when people praise her,” she said of Angel. “Actually, pag umaarte ako, nagagaya ko siya without meaning to.”
