Max Collins and husband Pancho Magno are set to welcome their baby boy this July via home birth.

In an interview via Zoom with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the press on Tuesday, May 12, the Kapuso couple said they've completed the online class on home birthing process.

They have also picked the doula and the midwife who will assist Max when she goes on labor.

A doula is a a non-medical professional trained to give physical and emotional support to a mother before, during, and after childbirth

Max said, "Nag-online class po ako for one month, on gentle birthing and home water birth. So since we kind of know how to go about it, what we need is a pool at home.

"Siyempre may iba pang kailangan, but other than that, we found a doula and a midwife na magfa-facilitate.

"Kasi hindi po yung OB yung magfa-facilitate ng labor. It would be the midwife, and yun lang so far."

Pancho admitted his initial worries about home-birth delivery, "Yung una talaga medyo nakakatakot, siyempre, di ba, sobrang delicate ng baby, e.

"Kailangan kumpleto ka sa gamit as much as possible, e. Pero sabi naman nila, kelangan namin to take like yung mga exercise and how to position the baby.

CHEERS TO PARENTHOOD

Pancho and Max are set to make a smoothie out of her own placenta after she delivers their baby boy.

The placenta is an organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy to help provide oxygen and nutrients to the growing fetus.

Max said, "I think half, I'll do the placenta smoothie and then half yung encapsulated."

Pancho averred, "Yung placenta kasi is yung bahay ni baby... Yung placenta niya, andun lahat ng nutrients from the mom, sa katawan niya.

"So ang gagawin, ida-dry, pwedeng i-shake siya, puwedeng haluan ng peanut butter, strawberries, and milk tapos iinumin niya."

According to Max, drinking placenta smoothies after giving birth have amazing benefits and helps with post-natal depression.

The Kapuso mom-to-be said, "It gives back the nutrients sa mom kasi maraming nawawala, di ba, after giving birth. And that's why they get postpartum depression..."

Pancho further explained, "It's physically and mentally [draining] for the mom kasi parang feeling nila, nawala yun sa part ng katawan nila kaya sila nade-depress or nato-trauma sila."

He added, "Nutrients pero iniinom nila yun, feeling nila, bumabalik lahat..."

Asked how it tastes, Pancho quipped, "Mini-mix naman nila with strawberries, berries. Lasang milk tea!"

But is he willing to try Max's placenta smoothie?

He answered, "Oo! Sabay kami! Cheers!"

max in good hands

According to Pancho, despite his initial concerns, the idea of a home birth was a mutual decision.

He related their discussion about it and what he told Max, "Kung saan ka mas relaxed.

"Kasi at the end of the day it's your body so you have the right for these decisions, e, kung saan mo gusto.

"So sabi ko, 'Yeah, kung saan ka mas relaxed then. Yun naman yung point, e.'"

And even then, Pancho knew Max will be in good hands because he was a nurse before he joined showbiz,

Pancho recalled, "Honestly, as a nurse, na-experience kong magpaanak, e, ilang beses... Nakita ko kung paano... Nag-administer ako ng gamot sa baby...

"Nag-lying in ako, e, so nakita ko first-hand yung mga kung paano lumabas yung mga baby, which is sobrang nakaka-proud...

"Sa lahat ng moms, I mean I'm super proud kung paano niyo nagagawa yun... "

He also mentioned the advantages of home birth, "Kasi sa hospital, maraming rules doon, e, alam mo naman.

"Pero pag nasa bahay ka, puwede kang manood ng Netflix habang nanganganak ka, e.

"Puwede ka mag-play ng kahit anong gusto mong song, puwede kang kumain ng gusto mong kainin."

And, most of all, as a former nurse, Pancho will know what to do if anything goes wrong.

But he said that they are still taking precautions, "Kailangan pa rin namin ng hospital na malapit sa house namin.

"Kilala ng midwife namin yung mga doctors dun, OB-GYN na nandun. Kailangan maging ready lang kami sa lahat."

For her part, Max said Pancho's nursing background has helped her fully understand the home birthing process.

She said, "Sa online classes namin, when the doula would explain certain things na hindi ko nage-gets, nage-gets niya kasi nurse naman siya.

"We talk about like the cutting of the umbilical cord or the placenta, things like that, you know, things that I'm not really aware about, mas alam niya.

"And sa kanya naman, more of the medical perspective from a hospital, as opposed to holistic, which is what we're doing now with home birth, it's a holistic practice.

"Pero siya, he tells me the benefits of epidural, kung ano yung iba kong options sa hospital."

In the meantime, Max and Pancho have been busy completing the items their baby will need.

Max said, "Pinag-usapan namin, by end of this month, dapat kumpleto na.

"Slowly kasi yung mga gamit na meron na kami like sterilizer, bottles. And then, nakapag-order na kami ng crib and stroller, pero hindi pa kumpleto, may mga kulang ba.
