Dimples Romana has always given her children the freedom to speak their mind and make their own choices.
In an exclusive interview with Bianca Gonzalez for Cinema News At Home Edition via Zoom on June 12, 2020, she says, "I don't want my children to feel na because artista ako, they have to follow that path.
"Parang di ko rin kaya. Si Callie rin, hindi rin talaga."
Although her daughter Callie isn't exactly closing her doors on showbiz.
Dimples says, "Lagi nga siyang tinatanong.
"'Anak, do you want to be an artista?' I once asked her, and she said, 'I don't know, maybe in the future.'
"And I said, 'Okay, o, e, in the future, kung gusto mo.'"
The celebrity mom likens her daughter's temperament to that of Toni Gonzaga.
"Alam mo si Celestine [Toni's real name], gustung-gusto kita lalo na nung nagkasama kami sa room, talagang nag-alaga sa akin si Toni.
"E, is Toni, parang si Callie. Very quiet, very smart, she reads a lot, same as Toni talaga.
"'Tapos she's very kind, and you know she speaks to people, parang ganun iyong personality ni Callie. Pero, you know, she's also very creative."
This is why Dimples was surprised to see her introverted daughter take an interest in vlogging.
"You know she didn't even ask me.
"That's why in her first vlog you will see that, I think we were walking around the kitchen, if I remembed that correctly, she said, 'Mommy, I'm vlogging.'
"'Uh, nagba-vlog ka?' 'Tapos parang dumaan pa ako, sabi ko, 'Ay nagva-vlog nga siya.'"
Despite her initial surprise, Dimples is ready to be supportive, as she has always been even with her friends.
"Ako, I don't like to judge people generally, all my friends know this.
"Like, if this is the way you like to live your life, okay. This is how fast you want to live your life, okay. This is how short you want to live, okay.
"No matter what phase you want to go on, I'm really more of a supporter.
"Alam na alam ng mga kaibigan ko iyan.
"Kapag tatawag sila sa akin, 'Ano bang gusto mong marinig? Iyong gusto mong marinig o iyong tama na dapat kong sabihin?' Mga ganyan."
Dimples believes that Callie knows this about her, which was why she didn't ask for permission before venturing into vlogging.
"Maybe she knows also na I'm very lenient with these things.
"She has her Instagram account for a long time, and I don't set any red flags or whatsoever.
"Alam naman niya ang mga parameters niya, ang mga limitations niya so okay lang.
"Cute nga iyong vlog niya, saan ka nakakita ng introvert na nagba-vlog?"
Meanwhile, her son Alonzo is the opposite of Callie. He is so energetic and charismatic, he seems to have the potential to follow in her footsteps.
"He's not very shy, but in our house we also try to encourage freedom to speak and to choose.
"So at an early age, they already practiced that. Kaya di na siya nahihiya, like he feels like he can say what he is about to say.
"Kumbaga there's no apprehensions from him or whatever. Parang ganun."
She remembers how she tried to engage Alonzo when he was still a baby.
"Noong two to three months old pa lang siya, we would, I don't know if you've ever tried that, iyong parang flash cards siya na parang red, white, black, 'tapos pina-follow lang niya, for attention lang niya.
"'Tapos from that time on, I would speak with him and coo with him, and then nakasanayan na namin na hanggang iyong sa language na sinasalita niya, iyong kung ano na iyong alam natin.
"So natutunan ko na si Alonzo, iyong pagkabibo niya, puwedeng inborn, pero puwede rin dahil lagi namin siyang kinakausap."
Today, Dimples is just thankful that her active son has not gotten into any accidents.
"Iba kapag lalake, more than anything iyong energy ko is really spent on having to climb after him, run after him.
"Thank God he hasn't been in any accidents because now is not the time to go to the hospital for anything other than talagang super needed na medication."
ON GIVING HER KIDS THE ROOM TO GROW
The Kapamilya actress also elaborated on her parenting style, where she lets Alonzo and Callie express themselves and make their own choices.
"I think when we give them enough room to grow, that's when they really move around.
"Mahirap kasi to put a leash on our children. Whether it is the way to speak or the way they dress up, the way they express themselves or their gifts.
"I actually enjoy the journey of not knowing my children everyday.
"Parang nasusurpresa ako na, 'Uy, marunong pala siya noon or magaling din pala siya sa ganito."
The celebrity mom reveals that Alonzo has been trying to do beatboxing on his own.
"Nakakatuwa, alam mo ipo-post ko siguro soon iyong nasa kama kami, pinagpatung-patong niya iyong pillows 'tapos parang nagdi-DJ siya.
"Iyong nagmi-mix siya ng sounds, vinideo ko 'tapos mayroon siyang parang pouring sound."
dimples teaches kids to always be kind to others
Contrary to the kontrabida roles she portrays, the Kadenang Ginto star teaches her kids to be kind and good.
"Ako siguro if there's any major rule, if there's only one I could keep, and Callie knows this and I think she mentioned it in one of her vlogs, it's to always be kind to people.
"Paulit-ulit kong sinasabi every day, even when they're talking here with one another, with kung sino ang madadaan dito, sa labas, sa ano, sabi ko sa kanila to always be kind of people regardless of how you're feeling, how bad your day was, or how icky you feel today.
"Lagi kong sinasabi that's not an excuse for you to be rude to people."
Dimples also believes that kindness begets kindness.
"Iyon ang lagi kong sinasabi na maging mabuti lang kayo sa iba kasi alam mo, iyong kabutihan, iyan ay bumabalik sa atin.
"Ako, naniniwala ako na kapag nagpakita ka ng kabutihan sa kapwa tao, maaring hindi sa akin bumalik, pero at least sa mga anak ko, in time na kakailanganin nila that somebody will also be good to them.
"You know, kindness goes around like that."
