Jodi Sta. Maria has entered a new phase as a parent as his son Thirdy Lacson transitions from childhood to adulthood.
In a livestream on Facebook for her brand endorsement last July 31, Jodi talked about how she has been adapting her parenting style to the changing ways of Thirdy.
She said, "I think it's different ngayon kasi he's a teenager, di ba? Fifteen years old na.
"He is his own person, trying to explore. He's very curious, trying to be his own individual.
"Nandun siya sa point na gusto niya ng identity separate from the mother.
"Unlike before, lahat ng gusto mo, gusto din niya...
"Of course, the difference now when it comes to discipline, parang mas sumusunod sila before sa atin.
"Kasi when Thirdy was younger, susunod siya because I have authority. I am his mother."
With this new dynamics in their relationship, the ABS-CBN actress has slackened her role as a figure of authority, and is now more of a "friend" to Thirdy.
She said, "I would say na, kung kailangan idisiplina, disiplinahin. Naniniwala ako na if you spare the rod, you spoil the child.
"Pero I just make sure na always come from a place of love and concern, so we do a lot of talking after ng pagdidisiplina.
"But I make sure din na I'm 'fun to be with' naman, para naman hindi niya isipin na kapag nakikita niya si mommy puro discipline o 'don't do this, don't do that,' ganyan.
"Kailangan makita niya ako na friend niya, but, at the same time, mommy pa rin niya."
Jodi hopes to be the person to wield the most influence on her son.
"But now, it comes from a place of, parang, mas relational. He follows me because, yun na nga, doon pumapasok iyong trust.
"Kasi naniniwala siya na kung ano sasabihin ko, alam niya na ang lagi kong isinasaalang-alang ang kinabubuti niya."
Thirdy, who will be turning 15 on December 23, is active on Twitter and Instagram and has added the video platform TikTok to his profiles.
He is the son of Jodi with former husband Pampi Lacson.
