Ian Veneracion was 22 years old when he married Pam Gallardo.
One of his reasons then: “Gusto ko parang kabarkada ko lang mga anak ko.”
Twenty years and three kids later, the Kapamilya actor has two words to describe fatherhood: “Enjoy” and “Sarap!”
That’s because he has found an adventure buddy in each of his three kids.
His eldest, the 19-year-old Draco is a “licensed paraglider and pilot” just like his dad.
His only girl, 16-year-old Deirdre, is into ice climbing, rock climbing, and flat tracking.
His youngest, 11-year-old Duccio, has been doing motocross with his dad and siblings.
At his presscon for Conzace, Ian said, “My panganay is sa La Salle ngayon taking up psychology. My daughter is senior high.
“Parang mga barkada ko lang sila.
“Sarap, kasi ako, I get to do activities with them.
“Two weekends ago lang, nasa Taal kami, sailing, wakeboarding.
“Gusto ko lang silang i-expose sa kung anu-ano and find where your passion is.”
Doesn’t his wife worry about their extreme sports?
He readily admitted, “Yes. Siyempre, nag-aalala lagi.”
Who’s the disciplinarian between him and Pam?
Smiling, Ian said, “Definitely, I’m kunsintidor.”
HAPPY CHILDHOOD. Though he grew up in the public eye, he had a normal childhood.
Entering showbiz at the age of eight via Joey de Leon’s television show Joey and Son, Ian recalled, “My parents made sure I would not stop school and, ayon, I had a happy childhood.”
Hence, when he took a break from acting, he recalled, “Na-miss ko. Lumiit na yung mundo ko, e. Just me and my classmates.”
In showbiz, he got to meet people from “all walks of life, all genders.”
What if his children would want to join showbiz, too?
Ian said, “Of course, hindi ko naman alam kung ano ang gusto nila sa buhay, di ba?
“Lagi ko lang sinasabi sa kanila, ‘Be the person you want to be. Don’t let me tell you who you should be.’”
For now, he wants to give his children not just a “happy” childhood, but let them “enjoy and really experience life."
After A Love To Last, he has already planned their next trip.
The proud dad excitedly huffed, “Looking forward to it.”
DAUGHTER’S SUITORS. Most dads worry about their daughters the minute they reach their teenage years.
In Ian’s case, he said he has no reason to worry.
“Hindi ako nag-aalala sa kanila, especially my daughter, siya yung the least na mag-aalala ako.”
What if she falls in love?
He said proudly, “Ang ganda ng training ko sa daughter ko.
"I don’t think may papasang manliligaw.”
Apparently, Ian’s parenting style makes his kids enjoy their “play time” more than their bonding with barkada.
“Kaya ko nga siya tinuruan ng lahat ng bagay.
“Mahihirapan siyang makahanap ng lalaking mas cool pa sa kanya,” Ian pointed out.
