'Magic 10' picked for 2006 MMFF

TEN movies have been picked for screening in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), YES! Online has learned.

The MMFF selection committee picked the “Magic 10” out of the original 19 entries that vied for a slot in the forthcoming 32nd edition of the filmfest—an exclusive exhibition of Filipino movies during the Christmas season. The final list reflected an assortment of genres ranging from action, drama, comedy, horror and fantasy.

An official presentation of the successful 2006 filmfest entries is set for November.

A 14-man selection and screening committee, headed by Marikina City training director Julie Borje, presented the official list of movies to Bayani Fernando, chair of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and overall chair of the MMFF executive committee. Compelling storyline, creativity, innovativeness, thematic values, global appeal, commercial viability and positive Filipino cultural and historical values were some of the criteria for judging.

The MMDA is the agency tasked to supervise in the annual two-week festival that will formally open on Christmas day. It will also organize the “Parade of Stars” wherein the floats of each contender will be toured in select areas in the metropolitan Manila area and other parts of the country. This parade aims to aid in the promotion of all the participating movies.

Aside from the regular awards given such as Best Picture and Best Actor, other MMFF awards include the Most Gender-Sensitive Film and the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award.
