Christian Friends and Samsters celebrate idols' birthday

The fans were the most important people during the free birthday concert of October celebrants Christian Bautista and Sam Concepcion. Dozens of fan club members, calling themselves Christian Friends and Samsters in honor of their idols, flocked to the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall as early as 4 PM to watch the stars perform in the concert dubbed as Back2Back Birthday Bash.

"This is really just a celebration for fans. It's a fans day. They [Christian and Sam] are here to spend time with their fans. We just realized that Sam and Christian's [birthdays] are two days apart so we said perfect...back-to-back," shares Audie Gemora, director of the said concert. Sam celebrates his birthday on October 17 while Christian's birthday is today.

The October 15 concert also coincided with the United Nation's Stand Up (Tumayo Tayo) campaign in support of the Millennium Development Goals. Christian and Sam led the crowd in reciting a pledge asking leaders of the nation to do their part in poverty reduction.

This concert was actually a double celebration for Sam. "This month is not just my birthday [month] but it also marks the first year anniversary of all the Samsters. One year na rin sila," shares the Little Big Star grand prize winner during an interview with PEP.

Sam, who plays Boy Bawang in the ABS-CBN series Super Inggo, is quite close to his fans. "I know most of them [personally], especially the core [group]...the ones who really started it. They're the brains behind the Samsters."

He adds: "The youngest Samster is like six years old...It's funny noh? [chuckles] The Samsters formed the group via the Internet. [They range] from six-year olds to adults. Mainly mga tweens. Not so kids, not so," explains the tween idol himself.

Aside from the Samsters, he also has a new fan club-Sam's Clique Clan-whose members keep in touch mainly through texting. The fourteen-year old performer is currently working on a new album to be released under Universal Records

For his part, Christian will be busy filming for his movie debut in Mano Po 5: Gua Ay Di, Regal Films' official entry to the 2006 Metro Manila Film Festival. His original single "My Heart Has A Mind of His Own" has been adapted as the movie's theme song. The balladeer will start shooting for the movie on October 24, opposite Angel Locsin and Richard Gutierrez. Incidentally, Mano Po 5 will also be Sam's movie debut since he was cast as the younger version of Christian in the film.

Christian has a simple wish for his 25th birthday. "My birthday wish is to reach more people and when I reach them, I hope mapapasaya ko sila," he says. When asked about his girlfriend, Rachelle Ann Go, he responds: "Rachelle and I are very good, we love each other-that's the best part. On Thursday [his birthday], kami lang...baka mag Tagaytay kami. Naka-book na siya."

Asia's Pop Idol is scheduled to hold a concert at Fort Canning Green, Singapore on Oct. 29.
