Gina Pareno wins Best Actress in Brussels independent filmfest



Veteran actress Gina Pareño won as best actress for her performance in Kubrador (Bet Collector) in the 33rd International Festival of Independent Films in Brussels, Belgium. The said film festival was held from November 7 to 12.

Taiwan’s entry, Blue Cha Cha, won best film.

This is the second international recognition for Gina’s performance in Kubrador. She earlier won best actress in the Osian Cinefan Film Festival in New Delhi, India.

Kubrador, directed by Jeffrey Jeturian, competed under the International Competition (open to international short, medium and full-length formats) of the International Film Festival. The two other categories in the festival were National Competition (exclusively for Belgian films) and Filmmaking by the Deaf (films made by/for the deaf).

Kubrador debuted in Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival last July. It is continuously being screened in numerous international film festivals such as: 28th Moscow International Film Festival—it won the FIPRESCI Award, 31st Toronto International Film Festival, 11th Pusan International Film Festival, 26th Hawaii International Film Festival, 30th Sao Paulo International Film Festival, 27th Thessaloniki International Film Festival, 37th Vancouver International Film Festival, 5th Asian Film Festival in Mumbai, and 7th Asiatica Film Mediale in Rome.

Kubrador recently won the Lino Brocka Award (grand prize) in the Cinemanila International Film Festival awards night held last Saturday, November 12, at the Malacañang Ceremonial Hall.
