Montano brothers prevail in celebrity boxing event

Cesar Montano and his brother Rommel both won their matches in the "Bakbakan '06 Part 2" celebrity boxing event held at the Star City Activity Center last November 18.

Cesar won his bout via unanimous decision against professional boxer Charlie Balena.

Cesar admitted he did not prepare for his bout: “Walang practice talaga. Yan, kulang sa hangin. Laban pa rin siyempre. Next time, we'll give them a better fight.”

Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) asked him about his strategy to win the match: “Hinihintay ko lang siyang pumasok e, dun ko lang siya binibigyan. Pero malakas. Alam kong magaling siyang boksingero. He’s been boxing all his life. May passion siya sa boxing. Makikita mo, mas may hangin siya sa akin e.”

Prior to Cesar’s victory, Rommel also won against his opponent Emilio Garcia. Like Cesar, the match went to Round 3, the final round in the celebrity category.

This was the second time Rommel participated in a celebrity boxing event. He first entered the ring in September wherein he lost to controversial celebrity Andrew Wolff, who kept on punching his opponent even after the bell rang. This caught the ire of Cesar, who attacked and dared Andrew to face him in the next boxing event.

Andrew had since left for the US.

Sunshine Cruz was there to support her husband and brother-in-law. She said: “Masaya ako that this time it was a clean fight for Rommel. Walang nandaya, walang nanlamang. Masaya din kami nanalo si Rommel. Kay buboy naman, manalo, matalo, I will always be his number one fan. Sanay sa sakitan yan. Action star yan e. Masaktan man yan, di iindahin yan kasi parang bakal ang buto ni Cesar e. Manalo, matalo, para sa puso ko, siya [Buboy] pa rin ang panalo.”

Cesar’s daughter, Angelina Isabel kept on shouting “Daddy! Daddy!” when her father was fighting in the ring.

The two earlier bouts didn’t have to reach the third round to decide on the winner. The first celebrity match saw Polo Ravales winning over Viva Hot Men’s Justin de Leon. The match was finished only in the first round after Polo delivered a strong right hook to Justin’s lower abdomen. Polo said: “Parang tinamaan ko siya sa sikmura e. Baka hindi rin siya ganung ka-prepared. Two weeks kasi akong nag-workout nang dire-diretso.”

The next fight is a slugfest between two models, John Hall and Christian Vasquez. In the first Bakbakan’ 06 last August, Christian was victorious against Paolo Paraiso. This time, John Hall’s solid jabs proved to be too much for Christian. Christian’s nose bled in the second match, forcing officials to stop the fight.

John Hall said: “I exercised. When I found out about the fight, I spend a little more time on the gym boxing instead of lifting weights. He hesitated on some combos. So I go in and see if I can take him out and it worked.”

After John’s match, he was congratulated by Polo.

Before the celebrities took the center stage, professional boxers gave the audience an impressive show. In the main event, Jury Noda of Angeles, Pampanga won via technical knock out against Jun Alba to bag the PBF JR. Welterweight Championship) in three rounds.

Dondon Jimenea of General Santos City won by a technical decision against Efren Huesca of Binangonan, Rizal. Jimenea took the game after successive head butts from Huesca. In the curtain opener, Michael Fariñas, won via technical knockout against Ronald Postrano.

The event was organized by the Manila Broadcasting Company.
