Meryll Soriano stars in her fourth indie film this year

The 24-year old daughter of Maricel Soriano's elder sister, Becbec, is bent on making her mark on the independent film scene.

Meryll Soriano talks to PEP about her passion for independent movies during the premiere of Rekados, her fourth indie film for this year.

“I really choose to do independent films because of the principles and the meanings. I really believe in it. I don’t do naman [projects] that I don’t believe in,” says Meryll, during the November 20 premiere of Rekados at Cinema 1 of SM Megamall.

Last July, her digital films Rotonda and In da Red Corner were shown as part of the Cinemalaya film festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The film Rotonda, which was helmed by Ron Bryant, won in the Best Director category. Meryll also co-starred in the Cinemanila 2006 Digital Lokal entry Numbalikdiwa with her aunt, Maricel Soriano—who won the Best Actress prize in the said film festival.

She points out, however, that she is not excluding herself from making mainstream projects. “Hindi naman sa hindi ako gumagawa ng commercial [movies] but I want to do movies that I really believe in,” says the young actress.

She declares: “I want my job to be an advocacy… I want my talent to be a tool. Ayokong pagkakitaan lang.”

In the 2006 Cinema One Originals entry Rekados, Meryll plays the role of a dutiful granddaughter (Pinay) to Boots Anson-Roa (Lola Josefina), the proprietress of Rekados Carinderia. Her mother in the movie is Eula Valdez (Laura), a headstrong woman who leaves her family behind in order to live with her man.

When asked about her role as a cook in the movie, Meryll reveals that she did not need to be trained to cook in Rekados. “Marunong na talaga ako [mag-cook]. Tinuruan ako ng stepdad ko [Hideo Naguchi].”

Rekados is a finalist in the 2006 Cinema One Originals, a contest among seven digital films selected by the cable channel after which it is named. Now on its second year, the film festival will run from November 24-26 at the Indie Sine (Cinema 8) of Robinson's Galleria.
