Don Allado and Maricar de Mesa: Mr. and Mrs. Right

Maricar De Mesa and Don Allado exchanged vows at the Our Lady of Consolation Parish in Tandang Sora, Quezon City, on December 1.

Hours before the wedding, PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) had the chance to talk to Maricar, the bride, at the Grand Terrace on Commonwealth Avenue. Thirty minutes before the wedding, PEP also had an ambush interview with Talk N’ Text forward-center Don Allado, the groom.

The two shared their love story and how this led to their exchange of I do’s.

SEPTEMBER 2002. Maricar told PEP how their friendship began four years ago: “We met through his uncle and my very good friend, Nani. Sila nag-introduce sa amin. Alam niya talaga, I didn’t like him. Hindi rin niya ako type [chuckles]. Hindi ko siya kilala [na player siya].

“Hindi ko siya type physically. Walang connection. Wala sa itsura...nasa personality ng tao. He can talk, he’s a good talker. Even sa States, hours kami sa phone. Nanliligaw pa lang siya sa akin nun.”

Don told his side of the story: “I told her she was an attractive lady but I wasn’t attracted to her. We were able to just talk on the phone for hours. We had interesting conversations about anything like basketball, politics... or just hanging out at the mall. We never run out of anything to talk about. We’re on the same wavelength. That’s very important.”

It took Maricar three-and-a-half months to say yes to Don. They became a couple on December 11, 2002.

Contrary to first impressions, Don has a softer, more sensitive side.

Maricar added: “One time, yung living room, pinuno niya talaga ng flowers. Pagbaba ko, yung living room namin punong-puno ng flowers. Yung dating niya lalakeng-lalake pero soft siya inside. Kind. Minsan mayroon lang akong hindi gusto, sisimangot lang ako. Alam na niya yun. Give way na siya. Minsan naiinis na ako, alam na niya gagawin niya.”

Like other couples, Maricar and Don also have petty fights, but none of them lasted for more than two days.

“Minor lang," she explained. "Minsan, wala ako sa mood, wala siya sa mood. Siya nagso-sorry. Most of the time, siyempre babae kunwari ma-pride. Nandyan na yan sa gate ko, kumakatok na yan. Kahit little things lang like food.”

MARCH 2006. Maricar said that Don is her third serious boyfriend. She told PEP how she finally decided that Don must be the one. “On our three years, dun ko na-feel. On our first year, sabi niya, 'I bought a lot.' Pinakita niya. Here in Loyola Grand [Villas]. After a few months, nagpapatayo na ng bahay. That moment, inisip ko, eto na.”

Then came March 28, 2006. Maricar said: “He brought me to Manila Peninsula, brought me to Old Manila. Drinking lang. Cocktails lang kami.

“Sabi niya, I have something for you. This time, sabi niya, 'Close your eyes.' Nagka-feeling ako. Mixed emotions e. Nablanko na lang lahat. Pag open ng eyes ko, nakaluhod na siya sa harap ko with the ring. Sabi niya, 'Will you marry me?'

“Matatawa ba ako? Ang gulo-gulo ng emotions ko. Yes, of course. Yung mga waiter nga natatawa. Pero may cubicle kami so hindi masyadong pansin. Napa-inom ako ng red wine lalo.” (Chuckles.)

PEP also asked them what makes each other extra special.

Maricar said: “He’s really focused. He knows his responsibilities. He knows what he wants. Alam niya kung ano yung priorities niya. I don’t think that’s common lalo na sa mga basketball players. Imagine at his age, he has his own house. His own property, his own business."

For his part, Don said: “I love her. She makes me happy. She makes me feel like I’m very special. She’s very passionate about life, towards growing as a person. All my needs, everything that has gone through my life, she’s been there. Very supportive, very understanding.”
