"This is it!" exclaims Maricar De Mesa a few moments before she enters the church.
Leaving behind any trace of uncertainty, the young star walks down the aisle brimming with hope and confidence. Evident on her lovely face is the anticipation of beginning her journey with groom Don Allado.
The lovely event took place at the Our Lady of Consolation Parish in Tandang Sora, Quezon City, on December 1. It was a union of two different people from two different worlds---a showbiz lady who has gone from sweet roles to character parts and a strong athlete whose domination in the basketball court is acknowledged even by those he plays against.
Maricar's closest friends in showbiz were her bridesmaids: Angelu De Leon, Tanya Garcia, and Maui Taylor. A sexier Almira Muhlach, wife of former PBA's Mr. Excitement Bong Alvarez, showed up. Rufa Mae Quinto and buddy LJ Moreno also came.
MESSAGES FOR THE COUPLE. Tanya told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that her message to Maricar and Don was simple: “I just wish them good health. I want them to be together forever. They know that whenever they need me, I will always be there, especially Maricar. I love her so deeply.”
Action star Rudy Fernandez said, “I wish them all the best and maging maligaya sila always ... 'yong Christ-centeredness na relationship.”
Maricel Soriano arrived with her regular companion, her sister Becbec. Also at the venue were Senator Jinggoy Estrada, German "Kuya Germs" Moreno, and Mark Anthony Fernandez.
Kuya Germs wished them the best of everything. Like a proud father, he said: “Congratulations. We all know Maricar started in my show--That’s Entertainment.”
Meanwhile, Don's buddies from the PBA, especially his Talk N’ Text teammates, were there for his big day. Players in attendance were Harvey Carey, Vic Pablo, Felix Belano, and Anthony Washington. Also included in the guest list were Patrick Fran, Renren Ritualo, Mac Cardona, and Mark Andaya. Also present were Jimmy Alapag and Coca-Cola's Ali Peek.
Other prominent professional basketball personalities present at the wedding were commentator Quinito Henson, Bong Ravena, Talk N’ Text Team manager Frankie Lim, Dominic Uy, Dino Aldeguer, and former PBA commissioner Jun Bernardino.
Mr. Bernardino also had a message for the couple: “I wish Don and Maricar all the best. Congratulations. I’m very happy for both of them... that they decided finally to settle as one. I wish them a lot of healthy, normal children that will take care of them in their growing years. I wish them all the best in their first few years of their married life hangga’t wala pa silang anak, para naman ma-enjoy nila yung kanilang pag-iisang dibdib. I wish them all the best when the children start coming.”
THE WEDDING RECEPTION. At the reception at the Grand Terrace on Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, more stars and basketball cagers arrived. Amazing Race Asia contender Aubrey Miles had boyfriend Troy Montero in tow. An unescorted Ara Mina also came. More of Don's friends, John Arigo and Asi Taulava, joined the reception. Talk 'N Text Coach Derrick Pumaren also came to greet the couple.
The wedding reception had a short program highlighted by an audio-visual presentation showing the images of Don and Maricar through the years. For the picture-taking, the couple did not go from table to table, but were joined by the guests instead.
The De Mesa-Allado wedding turned out to be the first wedding reception to be held at the Grand Terrace. Maricar quipped, “Kami ang bibinyag ng venue na ito. Bago yung style, yung may cascading waters. Sound proof siya. Lahat ng request ko binibigay nila.”
NO HONEYMOON YET. After the wedding, the couple admitted that they cannot go on honeymoon right away because of Don's commitments. In fact, a basketball work-out was scheduled the following day for their Sunday game against the second-seeded Sta. Lucia Realty.
Don says: “It will only enhance my game. I’m just very excited to get married. It’s a new chapter in my life. It’s just motivation for me.”
True enough, in their Sunday game, Don led a hungry Talk N’ Text team in trashing their opponent convincingly. This was Don’s first game as a married man.
Maricar says their honeymoon can wait until February. “Not yet. May game pa siya sa Sunday. Hanggang December 25, he has a game. Most likely, January meron siyang game. Most likely, February na [ang honeymoon]. We want a Europe tour—Barcelona, Paris, Italy. Seven countries. Yun ang pinag-iipunan namin ngayon.”
If their honeymoon has to wait until next year, more so their plans of having kids. The two agreed to start having kids after they've spent a little time with each other.
Maricar said: “After a year or two. We want to enjoy each other e. Pero kung ibigay ni Lord, why not? We want two---girl and a boy.” For his part, Don said: “We’re gonna save up.”
