The Philippines reclaims the Guinness record for kissing couples

Real-life sweethearts Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos give each other a kiss during the Lovapalooza.

The Philippines reigns supreme again in the Guinness Book of World Records for successfully gathering the most number of kissing couples during the Lovapalooza event held last Saturday, February 10, at SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.

At exactly 12 midnight, 6,124 couples led by Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo kissed their way to a new world record. Drew Arellano and Iya Villania also lip-locked for a few seconds. Joining the couples on stage were hosts Mariel Rodriguez and Juddha Paolo and singing sweethearts Christian Bautista and Rachelle Anne Go.

With the background music "The World Needs Now (Is Love)" playing all over, the north zone of SM Mall of Asia became the most romantic place on the planet—young and old, tall and short, Filipinos and foreigners participated in the world's biggest kissfest.

SCENE STEALER. Before leading all couples for the much-awaited kiss, PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) saw Juday and Ryan walking towards the backstage clad in matching white outfits. PEP witnessed the sweet gesture of Ryan carrying Juday before going up on stage.

In an interview with PEP, Judy Ann shared her plans with Ryan this coming Valentine's day: "Out of town lang, away from Manila—most probably sa beach. Still thinking... Last time kasi nung date namin nung Valentines, very romantic e. So hindi ko alam kung mahihigitan ko yung nagawa ko. Nag-iisip pa ako with my friends."

Maging Sino Ka Man stars John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo, and Sam Milby also hosted the event, along with Luis Manzano and Karel Marquez. Aside from hosting, Sam also performed the song "Close To You."

In another PEP interview, John Lloyd also talked about his plans for Valentine's day. "I will be taping for Maging Sino Ka Man. Any personal plans, it will remain personal," said the young actor whose girlfriend is Preview associate fashion editor Liz Uy.

SWEET SERENADE. It's not just the thousands of couples that made this year's Lovapalooza perfect. The event was made even sweeter by the duet of another real-life couple, singers Nina and Nyoy Volante. The two sung New Radicals's "Someday We'll Know." After which, Nina did her own renditions of "Secret Lovers" and "Love Moves in Mysterious Ways."

Acoustic performer Paolo Santos sang "Moonlight Over Paris," "Close," and "Seasons of Love."

After the ten-second smooching and kissing, the popular band Rivermaya took the center stage with their hit songs "Nerbyoso," "Elesi," "Wag Na Init Ulo Baby," "Panahon Na Naman," "214," "Umaaraw, Umuulan" and "You'll Be Safe Here." Rivermaya lead vocalist Rico Blanco even challenged the audience to set another record for most number of people jumping in a concert. The crowd was game and jumped as the band performed.

Lovapalooza 4 kicked off at seven in the evening with live performances by Orange and Lemons and Rocksteddy. Philippine Idol runner-up Jan Nieto, Kitchie Nadal, All Stars, Itchyworms, Sugarfree kept the night alive until the couples finally sealed the record with a kiss.

This is the country's second time to be the record-holder. The first ever Lovapalooza took place in 2004 and beat Chile. The following year, Hungarian outnumbered the Pinoys. And whether Hungary or Chile has the plan to continue to "kiss war"—let's wait and see.
