Pahayag ng 56-year-old actress, “I know, I was shocked and sad.
“I saw it in Sharon’s post when I read about it.
“You know, the man is a strong man, and at 90 years old, he’s still pushing it.
“We need still more prayers to keep going...”
Pagbabalik-tanaw niya, “The one where he directed me and I won a Best Supporting [Actress], yung Imortal with Vilma [Santos].
“That was the year that I was...
“I remember na buntis ako, then I died [in the film].
“I didn’t know I'd win.”
Sabi pa ni Cherie, “As an actor also, he played my father many, many Viva Films.
WORKING CONDITION IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY
Saad niya, “You know, this has been an issue since way back.
“I remember, my father [Eddie Mesa] when I was 10 years old, naging ano siya, naging president siya ng Kapisanan ng mga Artistang Pilipino.
“I was only 10 years old or younger pa, and then, when I was helping him at the office, already then, nag-uumpisa na siya na magkaroon ng union.
“Then, kursilitista siya nun, so he would do carolling in Christmas just to buy cavans of rice for the elderly actors.
“Many of them, I remember, we’re going to their homes, quite humble homes, and some of them desperate.
“And so it was a sad sight.
“I was then young, and maybe a lot of things have changed, but not quite enough to give them proper treatment and safety, for every actor, that they deserve.
“And not just the actors, but everybody—the crew, stuntmen...”
Patuloy ni Cherie, “Sa umpisa, napag-uusapan ‘yan. ‘Hey, c’mon, let’s gonna do something.’
“And after that, hindi napa-follow through, walang follow through.
“And kasi, ang kailangan, matulungan kami ng... we can’t stand alone.
“We need to be professionalized, and in this case, we need the support of the government.
“Kasi, sino naman ang lalaban para sa amin if things are not going....
“It’s sad, it’s a sad plight.”
