A member of ABS Star Circle batch two—that also included Patrick Garcia and Marvin Agustin, among others—Diether Ocampo is celebrating his tenth year in showbiz this month.
Aminado si Diet na hindi raw siya nakapag-prepare when he was first presented to the big boss of the now called Star Magic na si Johnny "Mr. M" Manahan kung kaya't narinig niya ang komento ni Mr. M sa kanya kung addict daw ba siya.
"But I refuse to accept that, I never gave up," sabi ni Diet sa solo presscon na ibinigay ng Star Magic kahapon ng tanghali, August 21, sa ABS-CBN compound.
That was 1996.
Also a member of the defunct Hunks, Diet holds the record of having the most number of soaps by any local actor. He has done Mula Sa Puso, Saan Ka Man Naroroon, Recuerdo de Amor, Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas, Till Death Do Us Part, Marina, Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin, Palimos ng Pag-ibig, Rounin, and the current Margarita.
Among his soaps, he considers Recuerdo De Amor and Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas as his favorites.
"Kasi ang Recuerdo ang first solo soap ko and sa Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas ko naman nakilala si Kristine [Hermosa, his partner]," paliwanag ng aktor.
Sa mga pelikula naman, pinakapaborito niya ang La Vida Rosa (2001) at Nasaan Ka Man (2005), kung saan nanalo siya ng Best Supporting Actor last year sa Gawad Tanglaw.
In his ten years in show business, isa si Diet sa may pinakamarami at pinakamatagal na endorsements, like Pizza Hut at Bench—both seven years. May bago rin siyang endorsements for Wheel Gallery and Time Studio.
Nakapagtayo na rin ng businesses si Diet at mukhang sinusuwerte siya sa latest niya, wherein he's part of the group that publishes the magazines Uno, A-List, and Baby Couture.
With the blessings he has been receiving, he is sharing it with his own foundation, ang K.I.D.S Foundation (Kabataan, Inyong Dapat Sagipin) he has put up with several friends.
"It is a foundation which my friends and I established, so that we may represent ourselves as a bridge that would connect less fortunate Filipino children to people who, like us, are blessed in life and want to give [to these children] but have difficulties in finding a venue or the opportunity to help.
"For years now, I have been silently trying to share the good blessings I have received to less fortunate children but I realized, it's difficult to do it alone. So, with my friends, we put this up," pahayag niya.
Last August 5, sa first Star Magic Ball, Mr. M presented Diet a check for his foundation amounting to P500,000, as donated collectively by the artists of the country's premiere talent management and development agency.
Nakikipagtulungan din ang foundation niya with Nike in a project called "Out of the Streets and Into the Courts" at may book campaign ito with Pizza Hut called "Isang Milyong Aklat, Isang Milyong Pangarap."
"Nagpapatayo kami ng mga basketball courts mostly sa mga schools. We have one in Bacolor, Pampanga, at may ginagawa rin kami sa Bacoor, Cavite [his hometown]. For the Nike project, darating si Kobe [Bryant of NBA]," kuwento ni Diether.
While the lower court has already granted the annulment of marriage nila ni Kristine, isinampa ito ng Solicitor General sa Court of Appeals and is now awaiting judgment.
"It's my choice," sabi ni Diether. "She may not be prepared yet, pero sa ngayon, nililigawan ko siyang muli dahil siya lang ang gusto kong makasama sa habambuhay," pagtatapos niya.
