Being a councilor and a mother at the same time is no easy feat. Just ask actress turned politician Aiko Melendez.
"I always believe in quality, not the quantity," said Aiko to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) yesterday, January 23, at the official unveiling of Marie France's new endorsers at the Shangri-la Hotel in Makati City.
"Even kunwari my time in City Hall, I make it a point na I still have time for my kids and then balance everything. Kasi as a mother, it's a responsibility and it's a job also being a mother. Lalo na ako, single parent ako, so it's just a matter of balancing everything. Mahirap, pero kung gusto mo naman, may paraan."
FOLLOWING PARENTS' FOOTSTEPS. Aiko confided that her two kids—Andre and Marthena—have been receiving offers to do commercials and other television appearances.
She excitedly mentioned that Andre almost made it into the ABS-CBN children's gag show, Goin' Bulilit, but his studies hindered the opportunity, aside from the fact that he didn't exhibit much interest during the time of the offer.
"He was offered for Goin' Bulilit kaya lang nga, he studies in Ateneo and you know how it is naman sa Ateneo, sobrang istrikto," she said. "So siguro during summer break, and ngayon, parang wala pa siyang hilig-hilig, e. He's into car racing kasi, so I don't want to push him into something that he doesn't like doing naman," explained Aiko.
There are some subtle signs, however, that the nine-year-old son of Aiko and ex-husband Jomari Yllana is starting to be drawn into the world of his celebrity parents.
"Sabi niya sa ‘kin one time, ‘Mama, Dada [Jomari] asked me if puwede mag-pose sa billboard,'" recalled Aiko tenderly. "'Sabi niya [Andre], ‘I think that's kinda cool mom. I wanna see myself on the billboard just like you.' Sabi ko, ‘Cool, you wanna do it? Okay for summer you'll do it.' So may mga ganoon na siyang pahapyaw-hapyaw."
The same goes for her one-year-seven-month old daughter with second hubby Martin Jickain.
"Kaya lang, with Marthena kasi is she's super kulit now. So siguro ‘pag mga two years old that's the time that I would allow her to come out in commercials," Aiko said.
As Aiko previously said, her relationship with Jomari and Martin is okay. Both doting dads have every weekend to bond with their respective kids while Aiko makes the most of the routine by spending time with her own family.
"Kaya nga nagkaka-Sunday blues ako dahil ‘pag Sunday, 'yong mga anak ko, wala sa akin. Nandoon sila sa kanya-kanyang tatay," she divulged before adding, "ako, kasama ko ‘yong pamilya ko naman, Mommy ko, mga kapatid ko."
